I LOVE this book. I even thought the movie was well-done. The Chairman was exactly how I pictured him. Such beautiful story. :)

i totally agree with you this tory was honestly amamxing. like from the first page she started off as telling what her life was like. she told us that she got kidnapped an sold by her parents. how she got seperated from her sister because she was pretty. she never told us how beautiful sh was because she knew wed know that she indeed was. during the story they refer to nature a lot. and i think that that is just awesome. it shows what the japanese value most and what they use with-in their own life. i never wanted this book to end. many times i would read thi sbook as if i was the one in the story. it made me laugh, feel embarrassed and also sad about what was going on. i feel like a little bit of love towards chiyo as she became sayuri but i understand that her life was very hard so i dont judge her. the author did such a good job. this book is amazing.

Oh I soooo agree with your descriptive passionate review, Arah-Lynda. I did not review the book since I've read it long before I joined GR, but I do remember the elements you have so eloquently pointed out here. Great review!

Thanks Margitte. You know I have thought many a time about reviewing books I read long before I joined goodreads but somehow I feel better when the experience is still fresh. Of course other reviewers here do it and quite admirably as well.

I loved the movie!! I know people that read the book say the book is MUCH better...and has a lot of differences.

Though there are some, I cannot come up with too many examples of the movie outshining the book. Strangers on a Train is one that comes immediately to mind for me.

I agree, and Rear Window was the one that came to my mind.

So both are Hitchcock movies. :)

Misery is another- I just finished reading it for a second time- and even though I really liked it...I LOVED the movie- much tamer..and less bloody. some would find that a minus- I find it a plus. :)

I rather liked the book more than the movie, read this before I joined GR and passed it on to some family members and they enjoyed it as well.

Can we really be surprised that the two immediate examples happen to be Hitchcock interpretations. I loved Misery both the book and the movie but the book still holds top rank for me. Great examples. Thanks for sharing.

I agree Maryann. It is a safe bet indeed to pass this one on to friends and family. I'm thrilled your family loved it too.

One of these days, I might re-read this one, Arah-Lynda, I remember really loving this, the kind of story that you just fall into and can't stop thinking about, and every time I see it, or hear it mentioned, I am instantly brought back to the feelings I had while reading it. So glad you loved it, too. It is, indeed, lyrically captivating. Lovely review!
