It鈥檚 time once a year for my library鈥檚 Winter Reading Challenge and my chance to score a FREEEEEEEE coffee mug. (Yes, I am the cheapest date you could ever imagine.) This year鈥檚 theme????

Basically any book that became a movie or television program. It turns out this is apparently the list of recommended reads I grab onto each year because I had read a bigly portion of the suggested titles (and had less than zero interest in some of the others). I had put A Dog鈥檚 Purpose on the wait list after seeing the preview when I took my kids to see Sing - a movie everyone else apparently loved but I thought was super . . . .

My eternal hold finally ended and it was my turn at the perfect time so I read this book on Day 1 of the challenge. And pretty much looked like . . . . .

The entire flippin鈥 time I was reading.

The story is about a dog who . . .

鈥淲as seized with an inexplicable question, a question of purpose. This didn鈥檛 seem like the sort of thing a dog should think about, but I found myself returning to the issue often. Why? Why did I harder a nagging feeling that as a dog there was something I was supposed to do?鈥

Which leads to discovering that . . . .

鈥淥f all the things I鈥檇 ever done, making ____________ laugh seemed the most important. It was, I reflected, the only thing that gave my life any purpose.鈥

And then . . . .

Followed by the dog being reincarnated only to discover . . . .

鈥淭his was, I decided, my purpose as a dog, to comfort the boy whenever he needed me.鈥

And . . . . .

But not only did the dog provide comfort . . . .

鈥淢y purpose, my whole life, had been to love him and be with him, to make him happy.鈥

And oh my god . . . . .

Then the dog came back AGAIN and began to question . . . .

鈥淐ould a dog have more than one purpose?鈥

Leading to . . . .

鈥淚 was a good dog. I had fulfilled my purpose.鈥

By this point I looked like I had been punched in the face and my family was like . . . .

But the story wasn鈥檛 over yet and I bet Kleenex stock prices went through the ROOF this morning. I don鈥檛 often have emotion (other than happiness and anger), but when I do everyone should watch the eff out.

Please note I realize this is not necessarily a 鈥済ood鈥 book 鈥 it鈥檚 written from a dog鈥檚 point of view so it鈥檚 pretty simple and it definitely is designed to make you feel all of the things, but I give zero shits. I love dogs and I hate almost all people so it worked great for me.

Book 1 of 5 in my annual quest for a new mug . . . .

Erin Kelly, I work at a library. I wanna know more about this Winter Reading Challenge. Also great review!

Kelly (and the Book Boar) Thanks Erin! I live in a town with two library systems. This one is . . . .

The other (big) library has always done one too, but there's no updated info for this year yet (boooooo) . . . .

Alissa Patrick I can't go see this movie- Marley and Me ruined all future dog movies for me.

Good luck with the new mug quest!!! Have you ever won the Winter Reading Challenge? I remember it's your favorite time of year =)

Kelly (and the Book Boar) I've never won the big prize, but it was never a big deal because usually it was a Kindle which I already had. This year the kids already told me to cheat submit an entry for everyone in the family since we all have our own cards . . . but I would have to do all the reading LOL. Jerks!

Mike Fantastic review, Kelly . I'm hopeful that the movie does the book justice and looking forward to seeing it in the upcoming weeks. This is certainly one of my favorites.

Gotta remember to pack kleenex for the movie too.....

Kelly (and the Book Boar) Mike I cried so hard at the preview my kid wanted me to change seats!

Deanna I finally saw the preview today! Oh my god I will need boxes of kleenex!

Laurie (barksbooks) This book is going to kill me, isn't it?

Yes.

SUSAN *Nevertheless, she persisted* Can't read the book or watch the movie. Just watching the coming attractions has me in lock down on a Thorazine drip.

I totally understand. True story: I was so at the point of no return of not being able to stop crying my kid asked what was going on in the book and I had to admit the dog was talking about how he would like to eat a taco. I just couldn't turn off the water works even for the little cutesie lines.
