The Dry (Aaron Falk, #1)

I almost didn't read The Dry because of some of the reviews I read. First there was a LOT of hype and then there appeared to be some blow back to that hype. That's sad because The Dry is actually a very well told, well thought out "whodunit" that has a mystery inside of a mystery which I always enjoy.
Aaron Falk is summoned home to attend the funeral of his childhood friend - one who allegedly had murdered his wife and son before turning the gun on himself. However, not all is as it seems and to complicate matters there was another death years ago that involved Aaron and his friend; a death this small rural town never forgot.
As Falk works the case we, the readers, learn about both deaths and all the secrets and lies that are and have been told and hidden in this town.
Jane Harper does an excellent job creating believable characters and a plausible storyline. Her descriptive writing style made me feel as though I was in the drought stricken outback of Australia. I must have gone through a case of bottled water while reading this book! It isn't a "thriller" so to speak but rather a very good, very satisfying detective novel. If you like those and are sick of the damsel is helpless and dying books that currently are flooding the market, then I highly recommend The Dry.
