really liked it
bookshelves: mystery, audio, libby-app, read-in-2022, recommended-by-a-not-stupid-friend

Ok, so this was not very big on the mystery stuff.
It was more of the story of the incredibly lovable Motswana detective, Mma Ramotswe. And as she solves cases in her town, you get a peek at the beauty and culture of Botswana. Honesty, the country itself is almost a character in this book.

description

This is truly a slow-moving story about her life, the lives of the people around her, and a loving look at the country she adores. And in between that, there are mysteries that get solved. Some are big, some are little, but all of them are cozy.
Like her bush tea.

description

This is obviously a much-loved series, so I don't know what I can really add to that.
Even now, I can't tell you why I grabbed the next book, other than I wanted something easy to listen to that would relax me. I mean, the mysteries aren't exciting and it seems like she's not even all that good at it sometimes. But, there you go.
The books just had that whateveritis that made me want to read just a little bit more.
Oh, and that ending. (view spoiler)

description

And that was just the perfect way to close the book.

Robert
Just the one season, unfortunately. But they filmed on location in Botswana and my wife and I enjoyed it a lot.

Anne Looks good! I'm putting on my to-watch list, Robert.

[Name Redacted] Ahhhh, Botswana! Where my Dissertation Advisor had a cerebral hemorrhage during a research trip and returned with no memory of having known & worked with me for five years...

Anne What? Stop it with your wild stories! But seriously, really?

[Name Redacted] Anne wrote: "What? Stop it with your wild stories! But seriously, really?"

Yep. She had to be flown down to South Africa for emergency treatment, then when she returned after 6 months or so (to great fanfare from the university) I was assured by the department that she was fully recovered and ready to "kick ass again." So I sent her an e-mail saying how glad I was that she was okay and asking when she'd feel up to working together on my (half-finished) dissertation again. Her return e-mail was very formal, said she was looking forward to meeting me for the first time, and that she loved helping new doctoral students get started.

Again, we'd known each other for FIVE years, and she'd been advising me for three of them.

I wrote to the head of the department in a panic; the head was clearly pretty skeptical, so i forwarded the e-mail to her and encouraged her to ask my advisor about me. I heard nothing for a week, after which the head immediately apologized for doubting me and took my advisor's place herself, even going so far as to get another prof. to sub-advise since the head specialized in Ancient Sumerian texts and I specialized in Ancient/Late Antique Mediterranean stuff (rest assured, that's a HUGE difference) and she couldn't understand 2/3 of what I was talking about.

All told, I left with a VERY good impression of the department head. XD

Anne DAMN! First, that's scary as hell. Second, good on you, dude.
When I need help with Antique Mediterranean stuff, you, my friend, are going to be my first phone call.

I'm now unwilling to go to Botswana. But I do wonder if my poor opinion of the book came from that...

Ha ha ha, happy to help in theory!

Anne We laugh, but then I find some mystic artifact in my attic and it just happens to be of ancient Mediterranean origin... We get 3 wishes and our adventure begins!

Oh, I'm not laughing. One of my primary areas of expertise is ancient Mediterranean magic; I literally learned ancient summoning rituals and curses. We're set!

Joe I have the same criticisms that you do, but Jill Scott as Precious Ramotswe in the 2008 HBO series and Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn are two examples of casting that fit the book like a tailored glove. It's like they went into acting to play those roles.

Anne I need to watch that show.

Jessica Omg the day I finally get around to logging on and updating book reviews I find you read this!?! Yay! I'm so glad you enjoyed it enough to keep going!

Anne It's oddly addicting...

Valerie Nice review, Anne. Definitely an easy-to-read series with lovable characters. Fun to get to know about Botswana, too! I hope you enjoy the next one as well. 🥰
