did not like it
bookshelves: 1001, dnf, foreign-lands

This appears to be written specifically for Western readers with no knowledge of Indian culture. You know, a commercial, populist work aimed to give you a flavor of India, shock you with arranged marriages, Indian family dynamics, struggles of Indian immigrants, etc., which at the same time gives you no real insight into the foreign mentality that isn't superficial or obvious.

Nothing new for me here. I say read In Other Rooms, Other Wonders instead if you are looking for something less trite.

Vinaya When are you going to read Ruskin Bond? When? When? Can I pleeease send it to you as a random GR gift? Please?

Tatiana I promise to push it up my TBR! My lib doesn't have any books by him, but I will put an extra effort into finding them.

Megan The movie wasn't great either.

Lisa Hayden Espenschade I didn't especially like it, either... I did finish but I found it rather dull.

Tatiana Judy wrote: "I'm currently reading it and am frustrated with it, too. My schtick is that it is written in third person, present tense which I think distances the reader. What think you? Plus, it is just depress..."

Honestly, I didn't read very far into it, so I can't really say I made a final judgment on the writing style itself.

When she started writing about her arranged marriage and how she couldn't call her husband by his name and explaining every Indian thing, I was just over it. This sort of superficial excursions into other cultures (especially the one I am very familiar with) do not interest me.

Chad in the ATL I was really underwhelmed with Unaccustomed Earth when I read it. sounds like that is just how she writes everything. Thanks for the review!
