Ok! First of all I'm here to tell you that non-fiction is normally not my bag. I think I got this book because I forgot to send in the "do not send" notice in a book club. That said..... I'm soooo happy that I didn't and I "made" myself read this. OMG!!! I lost track of how many times I laughed until there were tears running down my cheeks and how many smiles and chuckles it rang out of me!
This is a book about Bryson's trips (I believe he combines a few trips to "Oz" into this one book) to the really undiscovered island of Australia and his impressions of what he sees and who he meets. There is history, wonderfully funny and horribly gruesome and sad stories, lodging and traveling tips and a long list of places there that I really now want to see.
His wit and sarcastic humor is what did it for me. I will look for more of his books and hope that he goes on more journeys to share with his reading audience.

This was my first book for me but there will be more. What all books of his have you read Julie? I have a friend of mine that has one of his on the English language or something like that. We were going to exchange so she could read this one.

Oh great! I was going to get a few of his off of PBS soon too. It looks like he did a couple travel books?
I wasn't sure if I wanted to read this one Collette but you're changing my mind!The MOTHER TONGUE is hilarious whether you're interested in language or not. He also wrote A SHORT HISTORY OF NEARLY EVERYTHING that I still have hanging out on TBR....
Well if you want to sit, read a bit of history and laugh out loud, its a must read. I know AJ is sick of hearing about it, especially that part about me needing to visit Australia now. lol Great to hear on his other books too. :D
I have almost all his books on my to-read list now. This one was awesome. Especially the part about him getting chased by the dog running through that woman's backyard. I don't think I've ever laughed so hard at a book before.
Yeah, I have several of his by now too and really need to read another one. I love it when reading a book makes me laugh. His wit is wonderful. :)

If you haven't read it yet, he has a very short "book" called "Bill Bryson's African Diary". It's only 49 pages, but, if you can imagine, it's about a place he wasn't sure he really wanted to go lol very much worth your time!

Great review!! You would probably enjoy A Walk In The Woods, about his adventures hiking the Appalachian trail. Hilarious! One of my other faves is I'm a Stranger Here Myself, a collection of columns he wrote about returning to live in America after living in Britain for twenty years (he is originally from Des Moines IA). He truly has a way with words!
A walk in the wood is also hilarious!
