it was amazing
bookshelves: read2017, around-the-usa, location-usa-colorado, own

I have had this book on my shelf since 2012, when I first started collecting books to read for an Around the USA challenge that I planned at that time to finish in a year. Five years later I'm still working on it (I get easily distracted) but after , I felt compelled to move this one up the list.

The story moves between different characters, and the chapters are named after the characters being followed. It is always very clear where you are! The pace is slow, but the town is a small town, and the people live small lives. It would be easy to dismiss the book, and them, if you aren't willing to pay attention.

There are small beautiful parts in the writing that I really enjoyed, it was almost as if the author saw through the eyes of his characters and decided to look around for a minute. And by the end, I was completely emotionally invested in the characters, wanting them to find happiness.

ETA: This sinks into you, and I ended up adding a star for the full five.

Carla This is actually part of a trilogy. He wrote so well. I really connected with his books. We lost a wonderful writer when he passed. :(

Yes but I understand the other books don't follow these exact characters?

Carla Well, maybe the last one isn't? You might have to look that one up, but perhaps it's just interwoven. Book #2, Eventide, is a continuation, years later, the same McPheron brothers.

Oh good, I'd like to read more about them.

Angela M Lovely review.

Carol I'll be back after listening to your podcast.

Lark Benobi thanks for this review Jenny. I'm in awe of the simplicity of the writing and the complexity of the characters. Also loved that Haruf allows for happy endings

Jeremy Helton I like the sounds of this. Colorado is an interesting state.

Cecily Lovely review. I second the exhortation to read Eventide asap, as it's a continuation of this same story. (All Haruf's books are set in Holt, but these two are intricately connected.)

Lesley R M Excellent review Jenny!!😊
