Bridge of Clay

It's always about love isn't it? Everyone feels it, nobody truly understands it.
In this novel we learn the story of 'Clay Dunbar', the silent one, the boy with too much heart. One of five misfit brothers, the tireless unstoppable runner, an immovable force of nature. Training beyond meaning, relentlessly, unbeknown, and yet also aware, of a fateful day to come. The day of reckoning.
Before the Bridge, there was a Clay and a Carey.
Before the Murderer, there was a Michael and a Penelope; and an Abbey.
Two generations scarred by love, and tragedy.
A crazy idea unites them. The construction of an arched bridge.
The lifetime masterpiece of a murderer, and a boy with limitless heart.
A truly remarkable read. You only have to get past the first part of the book, which is an utter mess of near incomprehensible writing. But if you somehow manage to survive it, you then find a non-stop endless stream of terribly endearing moments. Beyond beautiful, beyond painful. I pretty much bookmarked every single page. Still, my all-time favorite is 'The Messenger', by far. But THIS ONE. This one is really something else. And 'The Book Thief' of course, literary awesomeness. Zusak never disappoints. Well, almost never.

PERSONAL NOTE : I apologize for the long delay between reviews, my mother broke her hip so I've been caring for her 24/7, which naturally took a nice toll on my reading time. Also must say I've been going through a gamer phase. Sadly, reading is but one of my many vices, which include but is not limited to, reading, gaming and movie-ing. So you can expect from me a ton of reviewing followed by weeks or months of complete silence from time to time, as I go through my different phases. I'm hoping to go through a reading phase again soon enough. Furthermore, I sort of promised myself not to read anything else until I was done with this effing book, which gave me one of my worst reading slumps ever. Not to mention, I sort of seem to have lost my desire to write. So, yeah, taking everything into consideration, it all contributed to create the perfect non-reading storm. Missed you all! Hope to be back soon :D!

Zusak nunca decepciona. Bueno, casi nunca.

I wish I didn't understand exactly what you mean but I completely do!

The Messenger is my #1 all time favorite and The Book Thief is strong in my top ten. Loved a very lot of this one, but it's not perfect. Yet, it's uniquely special in it's own way. Like everything Zusak writes lol.

so glad you liked it! i need to get around to reading this sooner than later now lol

I hope your Mum's recovery is going well & that you're doing ok too

Thank you Paige! She recently started to walk with a cane and like your father she had nails too. But sadly also has back problems so every day something different hurts her but at least she can walk again on her own and do stuff she probably shouldn't do :p

Thank you Yun! Can't say I'm back I'm barely reading at all these days. But at least I can spend some time on GR :D

Thank you so much Alex :D !

Thank you very much Chapter! She's starting to walk again on her own with a cane. Many e-hugs for you as well <3 !

Thank you Tahera ^_^. She's doing much better now!

Here is an idea - you could read books to her while caring."
Thank you Martin! She's doing better now. She never reads but now she's starting to. I guess recovering can get boring lol.

Buenos días Nat ! Thank you so much! She's slowly doing better, and me too I guess :D

Thank you very much Chris! She's doing better and can do stuff on her own now, like walking :)

Thank you Richard. It's good to be barely back!

It's something else all right. Overall I think I liked the Book Thief better, it's pure excellence and had absolutely no problems reading it. But if I set aside the terrible beginning from this book, I would have to say this one felt even better than the Book Thief, and by far.

Gracias Fonch !

Thank you very much Peter! I don't think it would disappoint you but I can see it happening. The beginning is hard enough to make dnf a very tempting option. Still, in some ways I think it's even better than The Book Thief, and if it wasn't for that beginning, it really would be.

Wow, a book that is such a mess at the beginning can only hope folks will hang on for it to get better. Lovely review Federico!
BTW, I'm a gamer too and when a new one that I like comes out, it's hard to pry me away from the game...it's like I'm not an adult. 😂

Es curioso la gente suele preferir "La ladrona de libros" de todas formas tengo este libro en mi lista. PD. Me alegró de que este mejor. It is curious the people usually preffer "The Book Thief" despite the fact i have this book in my list of books that i want to read it. PD. I cheer up that your mother is better.

I hope your mum is recovering well and regardless of what phase you're going through I hope you're enjoying it. Sometimes you just can't force these things, and breaks are also necessary ! 😊 👍

Thank you very much for your kind words Vaishali <3

I appreciate that feedback, Federico. :):)

As for your current phase, I totally get it. Reading slumps are brutal, aren't they? I think this happens to many of us from time to time and you've just got to honor where you're at and do what works best for you. When the timing is right, I'm sure you'll find yourself immersed in the books once more and my fingers are crossed that your writing mojo will eventually return too...
The perfect non-reading storm... *smh and smile*
That's a great way of putting it! 😁👍
Sounds like this book did a number on you at the outset, but that, in the end, it was worth the struggle. When you're pretty much bookmarking almost every page, that speaks volumes...
Welcome back, Federico, and wonderful review 😊
