Basic Plot: The women left behind when the patriarch of their family dies must cope with losing most of their money and social standing, and find a way to improve their lot.

There were several thoughts that kept running through my mind as I read this book. First- the screenplay Emma Thompson wrote for her film version of the book was excellent, even drawing dialogue from the passages in the novel. Second- it just wasn't as good as Pride and Prejudice. Am I going to continue on my Austen-reading voyage? Yes. But it was easy to tell this was one of Austen's earlier efforts, just from the style. A good book, though, and easy to see why it continues to be a favorite among bibliophiles.

Danielle The Book Huntress I really like the Masterpiece Theater version. David Morissey was divine as Captain Brandon.

Jackie "the Librarian" You're right, this isn't as sparkling as Pride & Prejudice. Eleanor doesn't have the spunk that Eliza Bennett does.
I actually prefer the movie to the book in this case!

Kat I'll have to check out the Masterpiece Theatre version- I haven't seen it.

Jackie- I think you're right- there was a lot more "wit" in P&P that wasn't as apparent here. There was some, but it was a lot more sedate.

Danielle The Book Huntress It is really good, Kat.
