This book is anecdotal, entertaining and can leave people uncomfortable; so in my opinion that is pretty successful. Having grown up in the south and spending the summers in Memphis/Mississippi with my grandparents who were too poor to have "help" but could be characterized in many of the same ways, I heard a lot of authentic voices in this book.
I don't see this book as "change your life". I am uncomfortable with the " great white hope" undertones present in the writing. But it was a book that was hard to put down and was insightfully written (in my opinion) and characterized much a of the south I grew up observing in an honest way. All the sad, embarrassing, and still strong and inspiring south that the south of my childhood was.
