Buddy read with Mini-me!

description

Ok. So this isn't my kind of book. There is literally nothing about the blurb that would tempt me to read something like this of my own free will. Unless this chick sported some mutant powers, came from another planet, or fought vampires in her spare time? No.
Everything...everything...about this story sounds sappy and gross.
Gonna have to give it a HARD pass.
And let me go ahead and apologize to all the people who feel marginalized or disgusted at the way this book treated such a serious subject as this girl's illness. <--I get it. Not cool.

However.
My Everything is the 12 year old little girl pictured above, and after seeing the trailer to the movie, she asked me to read this with her.
I know what you're thinking:
But Anne, you have 4 kids! How can that one mean everything to you.
I don't know! I love each one of them with all my heart. There's no science that can explain it, but it's true. Each one is the center of my entire world, each one is my favorite, and each of one of them is the best thing that ever happened to me.
Why?
Because I said so.
It's Mom Logic. You don't argue with that shit.
Anyway.
She's always been my reluctant reader, so it wouldn't have mattered what the hell this was about, there was no way I was turning this opportunity down.
So. Here I am, reviewing Everything, Everything.
sigh
Warning: Spoilers

description

So this is basically a sugary Nicholas Sparks-lite romance for teens. Minus the horrifying endings that come with most of his books...
Which is exactly what I thought it would be, and exactly why my 12 year old loooooooved it. And that's FINE.
I mean, the only thing that I really thought was great about the story was the length. I was able to finish it in a day, which was a HUGE bonus because I'd promised her that I would read the damn thing before we saw the movie in the theater.
Cha-ching! Slid in under the wire, just in time to sit through an hour and a half of teenage kissy face and fade to black sex.

description

The ending is pretty controversial, but until I'd read some of the reviews, I really didn't understand why. Mainly, because I don't read shit like this. Ever.
But I suppose it should have been marketed as a 'Mama's Fucking Crazy' story instead of a 'Sick Chick Falls In Love' story. Personally, I liked the fact that she wasn't really ill.
And here's why:
I got to lean over to my daughter during the movie and whisper, "See?! THAT'S what a bad mom looks like! I'm not looking so evil for not buying you those (f-ing overpriced!) shoes now, am I?"
Damn straight.

description

Ok. And this was the COOLEST part of the whole experience. After we left the theater, she turned to me and said the four little words I've been dying to hear her say for years:
The book was better.

Anyway, my kid gave it 5 OMG-IT-WAS-AMAZING! stars.
I'm giving it 3 OMG-MY-DAUGHTER-VOLUNTARILY-READ-A-BOOK! stars.

Jeff Fury Shark rules!!!

Anne Not exactly something I'd wanted to check out, but if it gets her to read a book I'm all for it!

message 3: by Jeff (new)

Jeff At least it's not Frankenstein or Connecticut Yankee. That would nix this before it got off the ground.

message 4: by Jeff (new)

Jeff Oh, and you two are adorable. :)

Anne Awww. I'm just basking in the glow of her adorableness.
Oh, and if I tried to get her to read either of those she'd probably just hiss at me. We saw the trailer for the movie, and there were literal HEARTS in her eyes when it was over. So I did that You know, this was a book first-thing, and she actually asked me to get it for her! I died of happiness just a little bit when that happened.

Anne I'm just happy she liked it so much!

Aww, thanks! Yeah, I'd have passed, too. If you know a young girl like mine, though...? I'm tossing Anna and the French Kiss at her next. Cross your fingers for me!

That was such a sweet review, i hope she wants to read more books now

Anne She does! Which is what makes me like this one. Looking back, I was reading V.C Andrews when I was her age, so I don't have ANY room to talk.

Thank you. My boys are reading Hounded & Storm Front on my recommendation and they're enjoying those. I feel like a real winner this month!

Jennifer "The book was better" - magical words. So glad you had the experience with your daughter. Great review!

Cyndi Excellent review!! As a mom of three I get "mom logic." Its an absolute fact! And also as one of the few who also avoid Sparks like the plague I'm glad to rank you among the hallowed group. But, the best part? "The book is better than the movie." *contented sigh*
That's when you know you're raising them right. Good job!!

message 26: by Jo (new) - rated it 2 stars

Jo The movie hasn't arrive to my country yet *dying*

Nicole Suder So amazing to hear about a mother and daughter duo reading a book together. I agree with your daughter's review, I thought this was a fun read. Check out "The Sun Is Also A Star" by Nicola Yoon. Maybe she will like that one as well.

Sparks is for people who enjoy it when a book makes them cry. Not me, man. That shit pisses me off! lol
I couldn't BELIEVE she actually said she liked the book better. I figured she's at least lie so she wouldn' t have to 'sound like Mom'.

Hopefully, it won't be much longer. It thought they did a good job with the adaptation. They did change a few things, but it made sense to do it.

Anne Ok, cool! I'll see if I can snag it for her! Thanks for the recommendation, Nicole!

Tadiana ✩Night Owl☽ Love this review! (written as I'm sitting here laughing out loud at the keyboard, looking like a dork) My 15 year old son used to ask me to read books that he loved so I could enjoy them too, and I would, even though I usually didn't love them the way he did. I kind of miss those days. My 19 year old daughter and I still share books, though.

message 34: by Anne (last edited May 30, 2017 04:05PM) (new) - rated it 3 stars

Anne Keep laughing, Tadiana, I don't want to be the only one who looks like a dork! My boys are getting into urban fantasy now, so I have a feeling I'll be able to relate to what they're reading pretty easily. I'm glad you can still read the same stuff as your daughter!

message 35: by Dannell (new)

Dannell I too am laughing out loud at my laptop!! This was an amazing review, for the humor alone! I am working so hard on my 11 year old reluctant reader, I WANT us to Buddy read something this summer, anything....he is video game obsessed. Even when I bring home Star Wars books, his favorite of all, he still won't read. Dang it! Suggestions for something we can both read????

message 36: by Anne (new) - rated it 3 stars

Anne Comic books, Dannell! If he's not into superheroes, then go for something else, like the graphic novelization of something he does like. *cough* Star Wars has comics...
Kids who don't automatically love reading are hard to shop for, but you just have to find a genre they enjoy (took me 12 years to find this kid's genre!).
Also, if you're comfortable with it, you can maybe get him something that has curse words in it. I've been able to get mine to read stuff simply by 'tossing it out there' that it may have too much adult content in it for them to really 'get it'. I've 'reverse psychologied' my boys into several books that way. lol
*is immediately stripped of all parenting awards*

message 37: by anjuli (new)

anjuli lol I love this review. And, exactly why I don't read stuff like this. I saw the trailer, and it didn't excite me enough to read the book. Now you just convinced me I made the right choice. BUT, if my kids wanted me to read it.....I would have done exactly what you did. Mine are age 6, so I am safe for now bwaahhh. Who knows what the future holds though, lol. I haven't read other reviews for this one so I have no idea what the controversy is.
BTW, love the picture...you two are adorable.

message 38: by Anne (new) - rated it 3 stars

Anne God! So lucky your kids are too young! But don't' worry, there'll be something equally horrible by the time they're old enough...heh.
;)

message 39: by Mekiah (new)

Mekiah Johnson That's so awesome that you did a buddy read with your daughter. I am not too into contemporary books, so I am there with you also.
I should try giving this book a try though, even though it is not my usual forte. I'm more a fantasy, sci-fi, dystopian, type of guy.

Dude, stay away from this unless you're reading it with your kid. Seriously. I'm right there with you when it comes to genres. I'd do anything for my kids, but if you aren't trying to get your child to read? Stick to the cool stuff!

Gunjan (NerdyBirdie) I agree with everything you said! I actually enjoyed this book. When I first read it, it was like a fluffy treat with the cute illustrations, the way her mother tried to provide for her and her dreams through schooling and passion (obviously the ending ruined this).

And then the ending happened. And I was like, “WTF. Have. I. Just. Read.

Nicole I loved all of your review! It's great you found a book to share with your daughter. That is usually the reason I have some of the books on my currently reading list too.

See, I NEVER expected to read this, so I had already 'spoiled the ending' for myself when it first came out and way so popular. I knew what was going to happen, but it was fun watching my daughter do the WTF face when she read it! lol

Stephanie Love the reviews with your kids. I wish I could get my son to read voluntarily. My son hates reading period. I even tried comics to no avail. Very painful for a gal who has always loved to read but he is a great kid and he is totes my everything.
