The Devil All the Time

What goes around comes around. For some that's good. It's what they deserve. For others it's sad. It's like destiny had set their path in life before they could walk, except along that path you still make your own choices, so is there a destiny at all? Those are a couple of things I walked away from this book thinking. That's not the only thing it's saying, and may not be it in the least. It's just what came to my mind by the end. Every reader may step away from this book with something different in mind, but one thing's for certain: the story is bleak. Besides that, it's raw, to the point, and the characters are damn intriguing, even those I loathed.
If I found a fault in this book, it's the twisted way nearly every character views God in their life. Each is worse than the next (excepting one I suppose). The preachers are no exception, in fact they may be some of the worst. When everything is one-sided like that, I tend to become annoyed with the lack of truth. But, I don't suppose I have to like all aspects of a book, and I remind myself that this is fiction let's always hope. So, 4 stars for the excellent writing and because I couldn't stop following these characters down that path, messed up as they were. Thankful for just that hint of redemption in one of them.

Thank you Nat. Leave it to a good author (first by him, so it surprised me) to make intriguing characters out of some truly nasty people.

Thank you Liz. I'm still wondering, in a way, just how the author did that. I guess he put a bit of humanness inside of every person along the way. I almost quit it early on, but kind of glad I didn't. I will consider his other books, so I guess that says something too.
