Toru Okada recently quit his job at the law office and has been spending his time alone in the house all day while his wife, Kumiko, goes to work. One day while cooking he receives a strange phone call from a women claiming to know him. He can't recognize her voice though and becomes confused by this turn of events. Kumiko is worried because recently their cat disappeared. Usually their cat comes home after a while even though he wanders off and so Toru goes off in search of the cat. On his search he meets and befriend the neighbor girl May Kasahara, who is staying home from school after getting into an accident. May and Toru spend time together, watching and waiting to see if the cat will come home. Things take an even weirder turn when Kumiko tells her husband to consult with Malta Kano, who helps people and Kumiko knows through her brother Noboru Wataya. Toru hates Noboru Wataya and is confused by this turn in events, even more so when Kumiko doesn't seem to come home one night, leading him to set out to search for her and get caught in a complex web all pertaining to Noboru Wataya.

This was my first Haruki Murakami book and I really enjoyed it, it's definitely a new favorite. I tend to enjoy magical realism a lot and I loved the writing and the characters and the themes that were explored in the book. I really enjoyed May and her obsession with death and her struggling to understand it and I enjoyed so much of the ideas that came up about relationships. I also just love mysticism and books that are more on the ideological side. I think it was incorporated really well with the plot, and the way things came up through out the book felt so natural which is hard to do in my opinion. The writing was also really great, and I loved the repetition and the way so many things in the book would occur again and again. I can't explain why it appealed to me so much but it just did. I also loved the way things tied up together, I love when story lines work together interlocking webs of events and ideas.

The only thing I may be some what iffy on is the ending, only because it felt abrupt in comparison to the rest of the book. Also things weren't really clear and I don't think we receive a good explanation for what was actually happening. Which may have been the point but I'm not smart enough to figure out why he may have done that if anyone has any ideas?

I wrote a review and now it's gone and I'm so mad but the book was great

Ms. Smartarse I'm also a huge fan of Murakami's writing style. It's interesting because he seems to be one of those love it or leave it kind of writers. And I always feel like I like precisely the aspects that others dislike.

The ending is actually typical for him. It's also one of the more frustrating things in his books... if you read more of his books though, I guess you'll get used to it eventually. :-P

Adina (notifications back, log out, clear cache) Nice review. Unfortunately, for me it was the last one and I did not enjoy it as much. After 5 others the themes repeat themselves and become boring.

I really like the vague writing style where things build up and intertwine so I'm in the love him camp with you. I can totally live with the ending though I liked his writing enough that I dont care as much about the suddenness of the resolution. I'm totally going to read more of his books.

I can totally understand that Adina like Ms. Smartarse said he's very much the sort of writer where you either love him or leave him because his writing style is pretty unique. I liked the way that the repetitiveness was used to give like a feeling of deja vu and how it tied together with the monotony of the rest of Toru's daily life though.

I was saying that it becomes boring after other 5 books that I read by him :)) He is/was one of my favorite writers but his books are similar. Another GR friend told me there is a game called Murakami bingo with his recurring themes. :)) I also read two short stories and his book about running so 8 in total.

Oh ha ha I've only read 1 so far so maybe that's why but that's hilarious I would totally play that as a drinking game. Maybe I should space out my reading for his books then so I won't get annoyed because I'd probably get really bored then as well

You should. i read too many in a relative short time. or I lost the interest for magic realism.

Lauren Yay for Murakami! I'm a huge fan, but like others mentioned above, I've had to space the books out. The themes definitely overlap, and details get hazy. My husband recently read Wind-up, and I found myself re-living it all through his experience. We had some fun teasing with May Kasahara's words, like a literary inside joke! Give yourself some time between, but definitely follow up with some more Murakami - I loved Kafka on the Shore and Hardboiled Wonderland and the End of the World. As for the ending, I agree. I wasn't sure exactly what happened and it felt like there were still loose ends...

alittlelifeofmel I loved my first Murakami, hated my second, loved my third and hated my fourth. I definitely think the best way to read Murakami is spaced out a bit (I read 4 back to back and im pretty sure they're all the same books with the same characters at this point) and don't always expect them all to be super good because he definitely has some duds
but you've intrigued me to this one.

Betsy Robinson I loved this book and I love Murakami. One of the things I love is that you don't have to understand what he's doing (I think I do because of my background in certain areas) in order to get mesmerized by the writing. I'm so glad you liked this, Pouting, and I enjoyed your review.

Yup. Here it is:

I found it hilarious, and agree with it fully. But I still like him.
It probably helps that I read about 1-2 books of his per year.

eg: I first read The Norwegian Wood (whose review I recently updated) over 15 years ago. XD

Mike Great review, Pouting. I have several of Murakami's books kicking around that I have been meaning to try. I think I'm a little more prepared now!

Yeah definitely will space them out, I usually try not to read too many similar books at one time or I start to stop liking the books but not because of them but because I'm just worn out by it all

Oh man I wish my boyfriend liked to read more, I know he'd constantly make jokes about it. I really want to read Kafka on the Shore but it might be a while before I get to picking up another one of his books since I just keep pilling up more and more books anyways. I'm glad I'm not the only one who felt like the ending was kind of lacking I thought I was just missing something like when I read poems and don't understand them without the historical context

Always Pouting Mel wrote: "I loved my first Murakami, hated my second, loved my third and hated my fourth. I definitely think the best way to read Murakami is spaced out a bit (I read 4 back to back and im pretty sure they'r..."

Yeah no I don't think I can think of any authors where all their works were great but this was pretty good, I think I may have enjoyed it more because it felt like a change of pace from what I had been reading. I definitely don't think he's everyday reading material though, more like something you enjoy if you pick up in between other books after a while between reading his other works.

I totally agree the plot line was so intriguing because I had no idea where he was planning on going with it and even as vague and confusing as things were the story flowed well, where as other times while reading books that attempt to do that I've just been lost or annoyed

Always Pouting Ms. Smartarse wrote: "Adina wrote: "Another GR friend told me there is a game called Murakami bingo with his recurring themes. :))."

YES. I have bookmarked this next time I read his novel I'll definitely be doing this ha ha but yeah I probably wouldn't have read anything else by him soon anyways since i have all these other books waiting around can't wait to do the bingo thing when I do get around to the next one though

Always Pouting Mike wrote: "Great review, Pouting. I have several of Murakami's books kicking around that I have been meaning to try. I think I'm a little more prepared now!"

Will it be your first time reading him also? But I'm super glad and hope you enjoy him as much as I did
