This was my first buddy read with the one and only, Craig, and what a pleasure this was. I’d like to thank Craig for reading this one with me. He always makes me smile and this was so much fun!

I’m not even sure where to start with my review. I was highly anticipating this book for some time after seeing so many 5 star reviews and awesome comments, but the book was just a “like and I wasn’t overly impressed like I thought I’d be.

The story takes place in 2044 and the world is in a Grimm state. A man by the name of James Halliday has created a virtual video game world known as the OASIS which becomes an escape for people. He’s hidden something in the labyrinth that everybody wants to find, and a teen by the name of Wade wants to be the one to find it first. The person who finds the prize is promised riches and as more people come in to play, it becomes a fight to the end as the gunters hunt for the prize while making their way through game after game.

The story fell a tad short despite some action and fast paced reading. I felt like there was a lot going on, maybe too much detail even, but the best parts in the book that really held my interest were all the 80s pop culture references. Some of my favorite movies, music, and games from the 80s were referenced and I found myself looking up old music videos like “The Safety Dance, a fave. Oh, the memories.

The music references really took me back and as a child of the 80s I can still remember sitting on my mom’s harvest green carpet in front of the Zenith watching them on MTV, which is nothing like what it used to be. And the games! It took me back to the days of my Atari and my Amiga Commodore: jousting for hours, and Burgertime! There were literally hundreds of references, even old Tv shows, and I almost want to rate it highly for that one reason. Sure, there were interesting parts in the book with Wade’s adventures in the OASIS and with all the competition, I continued to think it might pick up for me, but the book just kept me hanging on until the end with all the nostalgia. I was yearning for a pick me up.

I did think the story was unique and enjoyed the characters. I also thought it was very descriptive and I was extremely pleased with the ending. For me, I simply felt like the story maybe had too much added information which made me a little uncomfortable.

I’m still glad I read it and can’t wait to see the movie because the trailer looks awesome and I Tye Sheridan! 3.5***

Zhye I just started it too and I'm already having trouble. I have a problem with books that start off with "I did that now let me tell you the whole story."

Worth a try, mom! ;) <3

Terry Great review, Mischenko! Would you have liked it better if you didn't know all the hype for it ahead of time?

Honestly, I don't think so. I DID enjoy it, but the story just didn't keep me engaged. I just kept waiting for it to pick up. It's so hard to describe. I felt like there was a lot of added information that really wasn't necessary. The nostalgia is what interested me most. It's so unique though! I can't wait to watch the movie now. <3 Are you going to start it soon? I'm very interested in your thoughts on it!

Great info - that is good to know! It sounded like the hype is what ruined it for Craig. I've wondered how many of the good reviews and ratings were based mostly on the nostalgia vs what the storyline actually was. I hope to start it soon, but I've thought that for a while now, lol. Looks like still plenty of time to fit it in before the movie, I hope...

Thanks, Carol. I'm still glad I read it. It's just not a fave this year. <3 Thanks for sharing!

Yeah, Craig had some good points and I think we were feeling similar. I was just reading a comment from someone on my blog and she mentioned it was a DNF. It almost was for me too a few times, but the nostalgia is what kept me going. The story is so unique, it just didn't grab me. I still enjoyed it and I'm glad to have read it. I'll watch for your review. ;)

Thanks, Craig. The references were my favorite parts and that's what made the rating for me. I don't think it was a bad book at all and I still liked it, but you hit the nail on the head. It just fell short for me too and I also felt like there was a lot of extra information. It made my brain feel cloudy and I hate to admit that because I DO recommend the book still. I'm giving this to my 17-year-old gamer son to read and we'll see what he thinks. :) I think he'll love it.

Thanks so much for checking out my blog!

Definitely up for more BR's! Line 'em up. <3

Bonnie Shores Sorry that you didn't love the book. And, perhaps, @Terry is right... maybe the love of nostalgia is what made the book so appealing. 😧 That being said... your blog is AWESOME!!! You've done a really great job. I mean, the Ready Player One review isn't just a review... you added author info and his other works. Really cool! Anyway, I'm following so that I can eventually make my way through the whole thing. 💛

The nostalgia is what made it so appealing for me for sure. I did think the story was very unique, but it wasn't exciting enough for me to be totally enthralled.

Wow! Thanks for your kind comments on my blog. How sweet of you! Thanks for checking it out. I appreciate it so much. ;) <333

I liked Wade, but the development wasn't great for me. Something that I had a little issue with as well was the fact that the end is revealed in the beginning, which was weird for me. I still liked it, just not a fave. I think this may be a rare case of the movie being better than the book for me, but won't know until next year.

Victoria You've confirmed what I thought I'd feel about this, would love the nostalgia, the story sort of meh and not my thing. Will save the time and wait for the movie. Thanks!

I think it's worth a try! The ratings are excellent and I don't want to deter anyone from reading it. It just wasn't a fave. I'm excited for the movie as well.

message 43: by Cheri (new)

Cheri Wonderful review, Mischenko, I've avoided looking into this one too much, so yours is the first review of it that I can recall reading. I'm with Victoria, though the nostalgia aspect sounds somewhat compelling, but the story doesn't really hold any appeal to me but it might for one of my sons, and I suspect this will be a movie we'll see as a multi-generation family when it comes out.

Mischenko Thanks, Cheri. :) Can't wait for the movie! The nostalgia was what I loved and I'm glad to have read it. I did give this to my 17-year-old son and we will see what he has to say. He's a big gamer and I have a feeling he'll love it. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Cheri!

C. (Comment, never msg). Was the film better, Jen? Three stars are good for the book anyway. I have liked books a lot more than they indicate; docking for turns stories take that made no sense, or detracted from appreciation.
