A History of Loneliness

I need to give this 5 stars because the writing was superb and, well, it’s John Boyne.. a favorite.
This is the story of an Irish boy, Odran Yates, and his path to priesthood. He is a very good man and he becomes aware, at too late of a time, about the abuses going on in the Catholic Church. This covers the years of his life between 1964 and 2013.
Father Odran is such a loving character, and as the awareness unfolds in him, he makes himself accountable for the sins of others.
Boyne takes us into this dark and troubled history of the church with a gripping story, with much depth and sadness.

My next book by him that I read, will be The Absolutist!

This was my third Boyne book, and so far Furies is my favorite, but I still think this deserved all the stars 😊 I’m sure I will love The Absolutist also!

Thank you PorshaJo!

The Heart’s Invisible Furies was my first read of his and my favorite... but Ladder to the Sky was just as good but in a different way, just a genius concept 😃... I’m going to keep picking up more of his to read, I just must!

Thank you Cheri! You won’t be disappointed 😊

Dark and troubled indeed! I was raised Catholic and this makes me so sad. Great review, Karen. I'm only starting to get into this Irish author.

Thank you Marialyce! I love him too and plan to read all of his books eventually!

Yes Carol, I was raised Lutheran which is very similar since Martin Luther had been a Catholic monk... I think Martin had the right idea that priests should be able to marry...how else can they advise people in relationships.. and also.. it may have kept much of this abuse at bay.. so sad... but Father Oden in this book is an exception... lovely man!

I couldn't agree more, Karen...and, they should allow women to be part of the priesthood. I have a couple of this author's latest novels queued up for 2019.
