A dream within a dream

It was a fascinating first-acquaintance with Borges, an author who has been staying with me for a long time, a house-ghost, a little of this and a little of that, a glimpse into my subconscious and all legends and myths in one place.

Cleverly wrought essays on Swedish scholars and secret societies planting false information and a lot of babble

I clearly get the impression that Borges never minded hearing himself speak, and being spoken of.
The best short stories are the ones set free of time and space, stories that easily could weave into each other if they were allowed to, they are dreamlike labyrinths of the mind.

3 stars for too much “Listen to me I´m a genius. 4 stars for stylistic mastery, 4 stars for the great influence on world literature. Rounded up to 4 stars.

Lisa Lovely, Jacob! I will add "Listen to me, I'm a genius" to my bookshelves. It does probably overlap a bit with "Havanas en masse", but not entirely! Sometimes it matches "Nice try but no cigars". Your influence on my shelving...

I do like your attitude, dear friend. :-)

Dolors I loved how you described the timelessness of Borges' stories and your rating system, Jacob. You probably got much more from this collection than I did.

I really don´t know, Dolors. Some of the short stories I will reread later, others I´ll just wing as "read, no need to return". You cannot neglect the enormous influence Borges had, but you don´t have to love it all. At some point of fame an author will get everything published in collections and anthologies, even the less consistent works.
How did you find it?

Fernando Very good review. Regarding the "Listen to me me, I'm a genius", Borges was the opposite of that way of thinking.
He always use to diminish his work suggesting other writers as well and saying they were much more interesting than him.
He was one of the most humble writers I've ever knew.
