really liked it
bookshelves: frequently-reread, fantasy, award-winners, horror
Read 10 times. Last read November 12, 2010.

I've liked Robin McKinley in a low-level way for the past ten years or so. I really liked Beauty , The Hero and the Crown and The Blue Sword , and when I've seen a new McKinley book I've generally tried to pick it up and read it, for old time's sake. I thought I was fairly familiar with her style and tone.

Which is why I was completely unprepared for Sunshine. Who knew McKinley had a dark, experimental, inventive, alternate-universe/vampire novel in her? Who knew she had an engaging, modern, flawed character like Sunshine just waiting to come out and win my heart completely over?

Ever since I first picked it up, I reread Sunshine every few months, and it never ceases to enthrall and delight me. It has become one of my favorite books of all time.

Jill Hi Sean! I am no vampire fan, but you've convinced me on this one. Going on the to-reads shelf for a try out. By the way, I whole-heartedly support your never reading Breaking Dawn. It's an incredible waste of time. Several hundred pages of nothing.

Sean I hope you like it! It really is one of my very favorite books, and I love sharing it with people. :)

Betty You have captured exactly how I felt about this book! It became a favorite of mine before I even finished the last page and I find myself picking it up again just to relive the story.

Sean Yes, exactly! I find myself longing for the feeling I get when I read it, and I get no rest until I pick it up again. :D

Betty Have you ever read Howls Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones? That one has sort of the same power to make me read it again and again because the main charictor enjoys being herself so much and the story is so absurd, and every time I read it I feel happy. Its nothing like Sunshine in the story. But in the grab you and make you love it its similar.

Dennis "I find myself longing for the feeling I get when I read it".

Exactly.

E. Smith Where would we be if millions of impressionable minds had been exposed to this before "Twilight"? Sigh.

Sean E.: Seriously. :-/
