This was a nice read. Would not recommend if you are new to Pamuk.

What to expect?
- lots of literary symbolisms
- frequent comparisons between Greek epic + Firdowsi's story of Rostam and Sohrab + life of protagonist

What did not seem right?
-Pamuk starts explaining. Almost as if he is scared the reader will not be able to read between the lines
-comparison between the protagonist's life and the epics seemed repetitive and lumpy.
-less lyrical than usual Pamuk novels

Great review- and I agree with you - this might not be the best 'first' Pamuk book to choose. - but I enjoyed it - a couple surprises for me."

I did not have an issue with the moral part. As told in the story, all the events happened without prior knowledge of the history of any of the persons involved. So I think this is a possible twist in any story.

Jagrut Gadit Perfectly agree with your 'what didn't seem right' part.
The professorship at a US University seems to have taken its toll on the lyrical Pamuk!

Yes, I almost missed the old Pamuk.

Huzefa Jawadwala This was my first novel my him, and not the wisest choice in hindsight. Time and again I could feel the depth of the ideas lurking beneath the surface but it just felt out of grasp smothered by an over simplification of the themes.

IranKetab A beguiling mystery tale of family and romance. Pamuk is one of the great storytellers of our time.

Snow is a great read for someone new to Pamuk. Or if you are a romantic at heart, The Museum of Innocence is great too

I need to read White Castle. I have heard so much about it

Carole Jordan I know Pamuk is a revered Turkish writer and picked this up entirely on that basis. Part way through 2nd section and getting a bit bored with this bloke's self obsession. Trying to see it as an education in philosophical literature but I think it's mostly lost on me. Others say it's complex and clever and comes together in the 3rd section so I will persist! Thank you for your comments.

If this was your first Pamuk by any chance, I'd say you would not enjoy it much. I think Red Haired woman will be better enjoyed by fans of the writer. I agree with you - it might seem a little boring. I'd suggest looking up Snow or Museum of Innocence if you are keen to explore the writer.
