This is not a review. I wrote something that aspired to be a review but fell short. In the end all you really need to know is that I loved it. I finished it standing in line at the grocery with tears running down my face because it was that beautiful. It’s the ruminations of a man at the end of his life, it’s confession, it’s revelation, it’s a parable in a parable. It’s hopeful. Read it.

good for you. I'd like to get around to reading it too. (notice how I phrase that..doesn't look too hopeful, does it?) Looking forward to your thoughts on it--

Well, I'm told the book is hopeful in a way. Probably not in a way I'll like, but I'm studiously trying to be good. It may end up cherished or torn to bits. Very possibly the latter.
The Other Jessica (DFJ) wrote a very positive review of it, if I remember rightly.
But, why did you love it, J? I have a need to know. Before I add it to the other 100 or so on my 'to-read' list. Spillage, pleaseth.
This is available as an audio book at my library... I wonder if it will translate.
I would think so...might be a good one for that.
Confession: I listened to the middle part of it on my ipod* while ignoring my children and driving dangerously. (Not at the same time. That would be wrong.) At first I was bothered by the intrusion of the reader. His voice sounded different than the one in my head. More inflection added and he spoke faster than my hundred year old Kansan friend. I got over it though. The audio is excellent, Kim.
so this is how GRers fit more reading in...I must try it.
* Sometimes I misplace books. This one was so good I bought the audio from itunes because I couldn't wait for the print version to resurface from under the passenger seat of my car.
When I had an hour commute to work I borrowed them from the library, Jessica. This is the first I've tried in ten years though. I find I don't retain as much as I'd like but it was great to be able to read with two hands free.
yeah, I used to do it, but then the tape player broke in my car...time for a new one, CD obviously...
I can't function like that. Especially driving, I'm too busy raging at everyone. But, they have this new thing at our library where we can download the book to our iPod/MP3 players and that book is one of them. I might give it a shot.
Whoa! Seriously? Maybe it's time to pay my late fees.
