it was amazing
bookshelves: non-fiction, middle-grade

to watch a video review of this book on my channel, From Beginning to Bookend.

One cannot fathom what other marvelous books the world might have known had this talented, perceptive girl been permitted the life she was due.

"We don't want our belongings to be seized by the Germans, but we certainly don't want to fall into their clutches ourselves. So we shall disappear of our own accord and not wait until they come and fetch us."
"But, Daddy, when would it be?" He spoke so seriously that I grew very anxious.
"Don't worry about it, we shall arrange everything. Make the most of your carefree young life while you can."
That was all. Oh, may the fulfillment of these somber words remain far distant yet!

Fifteen months later . . .

The atmosphere is so oppressive, and sleepy and as heavy as lead. You don't hear a single bird singing outside, and a deadly close silence hangs everywhere, catching hold of me as if it will drag me down deep into an underworld.

Hannah Greendale (Hello, Bookworm) @Elyse: You're so sweet! <3 I've been so moved by Anne's novel. She was such a special person, and I'm saddened to think what timeless novels she'd have written had she been permitted the life she was due.
The 57 Bus's release date is right around the corner. I'm so excited for you to read it. Enjoy!

Ali Beautiful review! I also always wonder, what would Anne have written if time and place were different. She had a very special way with words and such a profound, "grown up" insight into life.

Hannah Greendale (Hello, Bookworm) @Ali: Did she ever. She was wise beyond her age and adept and penning her thoughts. I'll be heading out today to run errands just as soon as I can stop crying.

Annette This is not a novel. It is an autobiography. It really happened.

Sam (Rescue Dog Mom, Writer, Hugger) So true, Hannah. She was one of too many great losses... millions... Hugs

Hannah Greendale (Hello, Bookworm) @Annette: I sometimes forget that the strict definition of the word novel is a work of fiction. Thanks for reminding me. I do, however, suspect Anne would have penned fiction, as she had no idea her personal diary would be published.

Hannah Greendale (Hello, Bookworm) @Manda: True. So painfully true.

Hannah Greendale (Hello, Bookworm) @Sam: Thanks. Hugs.

Robyn I like to imagine that Anne would've grown into a fierce old woman who'd be comfortable telling everyone to get their sh*t together. :-)

Hannah Greendale (Hello, Bookworm) @Robyn: Me too!

Rama Rao Anne Frank's remarkable diary.

Hannah Greendale (Hello, Bookworm) @Rama: It is, indeed, remarkable. Every page of it.

Mac Marland This might be of interest, an interview with Anne Frank's best friend:

More insights into the person and the tragedy.

Hannah Greendale (Hello, Bookworm) @Mac: It most certainly is. Thanks for the link, Mac!

Sucharita Paul Tiwari Aah! One of my favourites..Soul stirring..

Hannah Greendale (Hello, Bookworm) @Sucharita Paul: And heartbreaking, too. I finished reading the final pages and was sobbing.

Sucharita Paul Tiwari Its one of those books that keeps you haunting for a long time!! I read it long back and remember not being able sleep a wink that night..

Fred Shaw Hannah great review. Anne Frank and here family will not be forgotten because of this book and Anne; no matter what the Germans did to them. They were brave and live on in readers hearts.

Hannah Greendale (Hello, Bookworm) @David: I can imagine. It's a worthwhile read. Really encourage you to pick it up.

Hannah Greendale (Hello, Bookworm) @Fred: Thank you. :)
