Why did Anne have to grow up so fast?

The first book was fabulous! Lots of fun mischief but the second has her at 16 already! Where did those four years go? Laura Ingalls Wilder didn't skimp out on the childhood.

I enjoyed this book - seeing Anne blossom into a young school teacher (aside: Totally not fair that everyone get such great jobs out of high school?? Same with Laura Ingalls Wilder. They just handed out jobs to anyone who would take them!)

A pet peeve of mine was really played upon. All kids are precocious angels. Yes, Anne has some struggles but you know from the start that she's going to overcome them magnificently.

It's a little too predictable. And the precocious moments were bordering annoying.

Also, did anyone else feel for poor Dora? Her twin brother, Davy, is a complete bullying snot yet Anne and Marilla just adore him (they even admit that the care more for that little snit)?!

Sure Dora is quiet, but she is dutiful and obedient and deserves twice as much attention as they are lavishing on that horrible Davy.

Still loved this book though!!

Diane Wallace Nice review, Miranda!

Thank you :)

Renn I think that if Marilla and Anne feel like Dora’s a flat character, they aren’t really seeing her for who she is. They pretty much slapped some labels on her and didn’t bother to look any deeper. Can’t Dora be loved in her own right? Can’t she be appreciated just as much as Davy is? I want justice for Dora.

Miranda Reads OMG! YES! JUSTICE FOR DORA!!

The orphaned kid just does her best to please her foster family, and they label her as "the boring twin" and don't give her any attention. Instead, they lavish all their spare time on her brother - who constantly acts out and makes life difficult for everyone.

Dora didn't deserve that. :(

Emily I really am interested in reading the rest on audio, but OMG I just want Rachel McAdams to read all of them to me!!! Or have Megan Follows read them. on audible theyre abridged :(

Miranda Reads Yeahhhhhh.... It's quite the dilemma :(

blorbo I am pitying Dora so so much! I can see why they like Davy so much, bit come on! Dora is such an angel! Plus, sometime Davy's bullying goes too far!

Miranda Reads Exactly. It bugs me so much how they just ignore the poor child :(

Darcy Ellis she already was 16 by the end of the first book. it took place over 5 years :)

Ughhhh don't remind me :p

Kenia (Sassenach) Mackenzie Fraser Oh poor Dora I felt for her just because she was well behaved and quiet doesn’t mean she didn’t need any attention!! Davy shit me a lot the things they let he get away with. Couldn’t they see the potential poor little Dora had the potential to bring her out of her shell and make her just as much a dreamer as any other child. The fact that they said that they liked Davy more just because he was more “lively ick!

It was SOOO frustrating. This book may have been published decades ago, but I will die on that hill.

immzzz It was extremely frustrating when they said such hurtful things about Dora just because she was a good child.

Also the first book begins with Anne being 11 and end with her being 16, they did not skip out on the childhood it was just that they covered it in the first book.

Ami She ends the first book at 16 tho

Ehhh... generally, i would say a single book covering 5 years goes a little fast. I would've LOVED for a whole series, one book per year, to really round out her character

Miranda Reads Ami wrote: "She ends the first book at 16 tho"

Yup

Nicoletta Yes I agree about Davy, bit of a pain.

Understatement of the year!

Lisa Jackson Davy is a monster. So manipulative and the times he gets away with murder is so frustrating. Poor Dora.

Ain't that the TRUTH!

Emi Gaviria me encanto este libro

Eliza DuBose The first book ends with Anne at 14/15.... so you didn’t miss her childhood at all...?

message 24: by Liz (new) - rated it 3 stars

Liz Davy is horrible and it has always made me mad that they doted on him so much.

Miranda Reads Eliza wrote: "The first book ends with Anne at 14/15.... so you didn’t miss her childhood at all...?"

I'm just saying that things could've been drawn out a lot more. I loved the more innocent adventures of Anne when she was young and found that the books got a little samey once she became an adult.

Miranda Reads Liz wrote: "Davy is horrible and it has always made me mad that they doted on him so much."

110% THIS

Valeria Monroy True, Davy was more annoying than intelligent, as Ana was always presuming. But what bother me the most were the dialogues of Davy and Paul, too mature for their age, predictable and a little too many.

AGREED!!

Miriam Galvin great review

Trish I have despised davy since the time he locked dora in a barn and just sat on his butt and watched as marilla and Anne frantically searched for her. And davy did it for 'fun' as things were dull and boring.

luisa you watch her grow up in the first book,it ends with her at the age of 14/15,you didnt miss anything
