2.5. This one is hard for me to rate. I am certainly an outlier here. The average rating is pretty high at 3.93. It took me quite a while to feel like I knew what the hell was going on in this (I think) post apocolyptic world. This is the 2nd book by VanDerMeer that's made me feel this way so I'm not sure if I'm just a dip or it's his writing style. I would have liked more back story as to why the world was in the state it was. I never felt very connected with the characters either. Maybe VanDerMeer wants it that way. Borne is the most bizarre character I think I've read about thus far. This is a very imaginative story though so it is weirdly entertaining (kind of slow pacing). Wishy washy thoughts I know.

Ron Melanie, I had some of those same feelings while reading Annihilation. Imaginative but out there.

This one was a bit easier to follow than Annihilation. Did you read the rest of the series? I'm a bit tempted too to see if things are explained but I have 100's of books to read. Not sure if I care enough.

No, I said I would return to finish the series, but that's been quite awhile. My feelings are pretty much like yours. So many other good books coming along.

We will have to compare notes if either of us continue the series.

Tammy I read the first one and gave up. I can’t imagine how a film was made from it

I may watch it to see how it's done but I saw a trailer and it looks kind of bad.

J.L. Sutton I might have rated it a bit higher, but I agree with you here. There were inventive and entertaining aspects to this novel, but it needed a more solid back story so the reader could really understand what was going on.

Ethan Demartelaere Annihilation is by far the best of the SR trilogy, but very few answers are to be found in the 2nd and 3rd books. I think Vandermeer likes to leave you wondering and questioning wtf just happened.
