Rating 4.5
When I initially saw reviews of this book, I thought 'OK', someday I might consider it. I don't read much Thriller or mystery books so I was not in too big of hurry to read it. I ended up winning a copy of this via a giveaway from ReadItForward. And then it sat at my house until I decided to give it a shot. I was then immediately hooked. I had to think about my rating and review for a bit though.
The story rotates in time between 1986 and 2016 telling the story of four young boys and The Chalk Man. Naturally, boys can tell whoppers of stories and that's how the nickname 'The Chalk Man' came about. The story is told from the point of view of Ed at 12 years old, and then a later, older Ed. When he was young, he and his friends found a dead body, all in pieces. It's quite gruesome. Then, slowly Ed unfolds the story of how the dead body came to be, who it was, and how it all happened. And when they were kids, he and his friends used to draw chalk men to leave each other messages. And someone left them chalk men messages, leading them to find the dismembered body. Now, in 2016, everything is coming back to them, someone is sending them letters with chalk men, drawing them. The story slowly unfolds and it seemed each chapter ended in some cliffhanger. I loved it, I would read more and more to see what would happen. I had to stop myself from flipping ahead chapters to stay in the same year and find out what happens. I had to know! It was quite a psychological mind mess and creepy too.
Now, as I read this, I could not help thinking of various Stephen King works - Stand By Me and It. This story had that same creepy vibe in it from It, the rotating story back and forth in time, the sinister feel to it, and that coming of age story in Stand By Me (along with a dead body). (I used to read King a *long* time ago.) I shucked all responsibility to read this one and it kept me so enthralled...BUT...something in the ending really bugged me, hence a lower rating. (view spoiler) Overall, I'm so glad I read this one, it was a great way to kick off the new year of reading. And I look forward to more from this author in the future. Thanks so much Penguin Random House, Crown Publishing, and ReadItForward for an advance copy of this one. Else, I'm sure it would have languished on my TBR mountain forever. #RIFWinner

Great! We will have to compare notes when done. Enjoy!

Ha! Sorry, I had to think about the rating on this one. :-) It's worth the read. If you love thrillers and mystery reads, you should pick this one up. I do think it's worth the read and hope you get a chance to read it.

Those types of books are definitely what I like. I got this book from BOTM so it's just sitting here until I can read it. :)

Oh then if you love these types of books....your in for a great read! Can't wait to hear what you think about it. Nice it was in the BOTM box.

Thanks Sarah! It's always nice to win a good book. I have won quite a number of duds in the past, so this was great. Glad you loved this one!

Thanks Svetlana! It's really a good book and hope you get a chance to read it. Though I'm sure it would have sat on my shelves had I not won a copy. Just so many good books to read. Ha!

I hope you enjoy this one when you get a chance to read it Jen!

Thanks Marialyce! Glad you liked this one!

Thanks Luvtoread! How true! A sign of a good book for me is when I can't tear myself away....and this one fit that bill. And so many people just love it too.

Thanks Bianca! You too...Happy New Year to you and hoping for good reads for you. Looking forward to reading your reviews and finding new books!

Thanks Jennifer! I hope you love this one when you get a chance to read it. Looking forward to your thoughts.

Oh great Dana! Looking forward to your thoughts on it - hope you like it.

That's how I felt too - the blurb on it caught my attention but wasn't rushing to get it. But then once I started reading it, I was hooked. It's rare I even try a thriller, let alone really like it. Hope you give it a shot and you like it Sonja!

Thanks Jaline! It really grabs you from the start. Hope you give it a shot and you love it!

Thank you Meredith! A surprise read for me!

Thanks Ron! Oh I'm quite sure then you will like this one then. That's great those are your two favorite books ever too. I remember reading It and was so freaked out by it, I loved it. So looking forward to your thoughts on this one when you get a chance to read it.

yes! lol! But to be fair the author gave us clues, we just didn't want to go there in our minds, lol

True, she did. Well, I knew something was off w/him in the very beginning but so many other possible options. I still keep thinking of this one, so shows a sign of a great book. I'm keeping my copy as I might have to revisit again, just to see what I missed on the clues.
