Choice of role
You can be either a bad girl or a good girl. When you have played a bit more, you can even try combining these two roles! See "Advanced options" below.
Bad girl
If you are a bad girl, you will be able to speak your mind and express your sexuality freely, but you will be beaten, raped and called a whore and a witch. You may also be subjected to other punishments, such as being disowned by your family or forced into a dangerous and poorly remunerated job.
Good girl
If you are a good girl, you will be grudgingly accepted by society, but you will have to work twenty-four hours a day to learn the complex rules you need to follow, you will constantly feel that you are a fraud and an imposter, and you will need to sleep with people who do not attract you while pretending that they do.
Goal of the game
Your goal is to have children and live long enough to see them grow up only mildly damaged. You will find that this is harder than it sounds, but that's all part of the fun!
Advanced options
When you have played the game a few times, you may want to try combining the bad girl and good girl roles. You may for example be a bad girl who gets married and tries to stay faithful to her husband, or a good girl who writes a daring and truthful novel about her life. Note however that none of these strategies will actually let you win.
Useful tips
If you decide to get serious about WOMAN�, there are several excellent books which will help you improve your skills. Elena Ferrante's series is particularly good. Go out and buy a copy tomorrow, you won't regret it!
WARNING
Spending too much time playing WOMAN� can be very depressing. Make sure you take frequent breaks, and remember that it's only a game.

Cecily, I forwarded your comments to the creators of WOMAN�. They reply (a) that if you play for a bit, you'll soon find out, (b) that they wanted to call the roles "uncooperative woman" and "cooperative woman", but the marketing department, who were also responsible for the design on the box, wouldn't let them.
Very helpful. Thank you. I'm definitely not cooperative, but I haven't - yet - suffered the bad girl punishments you mention. I'm a bit worried now...

This review is awesome. Can't decide which one is better, this one or your review of the previous one, but I definitely love your approach to it by means of an RPG. :DEh, my depression here wasn't that bad. The third one left me with no will to read for... like an entire day. Probably would've lasted longer, if I hadn't been on holiday. And holidays are the definition of reading challenges between myself and my best friend. :P

I spent several days thinking about how to review this book... my first thought was to write it as a new chapter in Candide, but I couldn't make it work.I just wish I could read her in the original. I bought the third book in both French and Italian, and it's not like I can't understand the Italian at all, but it's very slow and I really have to guess a lot. My impression is that the French is quite faithful in terms of style, but I can't say I'm too sure about that.
I seem to have done the character creation bit wrong.
Oh, is your bad girl showing disturbingly human traits or something? That often upsets beginners, but I'm told it's just part of the game.
Now that I've finally read this and the first one, I appreciate your gamification all the more!
If Elena Ferrante wants to help design WOMAN�, I'm good with taking 50-50 on it. Heck, I could go as low as 60-40. I've been improving my Italian and everything.
How have I missed this review?! I always wondered why people wanted to play the WOMAN� game.
