This book should be titled "Lots of People Die and Everything is Terrible". This book is depressing, and not in a "at least there's a moral to the story" kind of way, or a "things eventually will get better" kind of way, or even a "at least they found some happiness" kind of way. Nope. The people in this book just all suffer and/or die. I don't think a single character had an even quasi-happy ending in this whole thing. Whatever happiness they do manage to find is always pretty quickly taken away. It's 500+ pages of various kinds of misery and every time you turn around there's a new character being added and they aren't happy either. So yeah, this book may have been well researched and well written, and full of interesting views I have never seen before in regards to the plight of Koreans living in Japan right before/during/after WWII, but all of those positive things were overshadowed by just how unhappy this book made me feel. It even made me angry at times. So I would not really recommend this based on 'enjoyment' of reading, but I would recommend it based on potential eye opening views of Japan and North and South Korea.

It's the invisible subtitle for movies/shows too, like Game of Thrones. Haha!

Debbie W. Great review, Holly! So many readers enjoyed this story, but I just couldn't get there!

AnnMarie That's a perfect title.

Mel I am getting through this book and I agree with your review! I am hoping the third part would be not so sad, but spoilers have given me some expectations.

Linda I don’t read reviews in advance usually. But I was two hours into this one, which was highly recommended by a friend. I was not feeling it, and did not want to continue. I am considering your excellent review my permission to pause or abandon. Thank you very much!
