A lovely book about a dog looking for his purpose in life. He goes through four births/rebirths as the same soul in a different dog, adding his experiences and knowledge through the ups and downs of life as a dog. He wants to serve his human owners to the best of his ability even if they are cruel and thoughtless. His joy in being a dog shines through with his delight in running and explorng, his disdain of cats (who have no purpose that he can see) and his love for the special boy in his life. A charming book, especially for dog lovers.

Amber Nice review, Carolyn. It's been a while since I read this, so I can't remember: would it be suitable for under 12s? I'm thinking of reading it aloud to my kids.

Joe What a charming concept!

I think it would be okay. I don't remember any overt violence - some hardship for the dog - tying it up, starvation, no sex (but some 'wrestling' on the couch according to the dog) and of course it's sad when the dog dies at the end of the the first three stories, but then he's born again so under 12s would probably cope with that. There is an abduction of a little girl so that could be a bit scary but she is found safe and sound and the bad man caught. There was a movie made of the book recently but I haven't seen it.
