4 Stars
I ended up giving it 4 stars because of the journey. I think by the end, Amari started to be one of the bigger heroes of the story. I really liked her character.
The book had a lot it was trying to cover. I think it really should have had more depth to the characters, more information on exactly what happened when Saran took over, and more background on the Maji and gods. So having this be the first book in this series, you can see where the author is just getting her thoughts and hopes on paper, but ended up not giving enough background on the "why's".... I did not see if this is supposed to be a trilogy or not; but I think a series would have been better. That way we can get mmoorreee.
With that being said, I found it very interesting. The language, the world-building and these wonderful young characters. Even though there is much more to learn about the characters, as the series progresses I'm sure; I was able to understand and feel some of the emotions the author was trying to convey. I did not feel like these were baseless or shallow characters. I think with the ending, there will be even more information to absorb and sift through. I am really hoping for background on how Orisha came to be and how we got to this kingdom with basically an overseer as king. Interesting.
There are YA tropes throughout the book and a few "Oh, come on moments", hence the missing star. Maybe, it should be 3.5 stars, but I enjoyed it too much...ssoooo.
I will definitely read the next book and see how this world evolves after everything that has happened.

Thanks, Kimberly! I really wanted this one and won it; which usually never happens.
I usually will win something I am interested in, but not excited about. I have won books that have totally surprised me, and gave me a new author, though. I like when that happens :)

I've had a few of those that ended up being among the "favorites"!!

Yes!! I love that. The book is pretty fat; but looks like it may be an easy read or at least pacing will be good. :)

The first one I remember REALLY wanting--and then winning!--was Jonathan Janz's SAVAGE SPECIES. Still a favorite!

Oohhh, that's a good one from what I hear. Congrats!!

I really enjoyed it. YA Tropes and all.
I hope you enjoy it enough to stick with the series. I sure am. :)
