It is finished.

Why yes, I did just complete my longest read to date. I simultaneously feel relieved and accomplished, drained and fulfilled. There are few authors who can successfully deliver such conflicting feelings, which is why he's one of the most well known names in the fiction world. I feel as if I could write an entire book about this tender and terrifying "coming of age" tale, but I also feel as if all the umph has left my body for the moment. Definitely my favorite King novel that I've read so far (UPDATE- that award now goes to 11/22/63) and I hope to revisit this review after a time of processing and reflection to add more thoughts. Thanks for all the hand holding and encouragement you all provided along the way!

Shon Just started this book. Started it at 10pm and couldn’t sleep for hours

Well I did see the movie recently so I feel somewhat prepared but so far I’m loving the story and how different it is from any of the film/tv adaptions.

Katee It's so different than any film/tv adaptation. It's interesting having read and watched the adaptations to see how they've switched things up to fit the times they were made compares to the novel. It's a really good book but a beast due to length. Happy reading!

So true Katee! And thank you!

Rich I read it when it first came out, good not great not a great ending

Lisa I really enjoyed this book, but that being said, it’s a few hundred pages too long - in my opinion. I need to nerve up and watch the movie. Lol!

Samantha Keen Took me forever to get through it. I also think I expected more.

If I’m being honest I feel all his books could be shaved down a few hundred pages. 🤣

I will say I had to go to the bathroom three times last night and that was a problem, and I’m barely into this yet, so we’re in for a long haul. 🤣

Tammy I have been thinking about reading this one too.

I've carried that phrase with me since I was a kid. ;)

Matthew Ginger wrote: "I just bought the audio book of this today! Good luck Chelsea. I'm going to tackle it this year as well. :D"

I read it when I was a teenager and listened to it last year. The audio is pretty good.

Chelsea - this is one of those Stephen King books where it is good, but you also wonder if the publisher should not have let him get this out of control! ;)

James Joyce "Chelsea Humphrey reviewed It"

Reviewed what?

The endless, if minimal, amusements associated with a book called "it". Stephen King's contribution to the "who's on first" concept of comedy.

Melissa This was a beach read for me when it first came out because I could never read Stephen King after dark. LOL!

Good luck! This is one of my favorite of his novels. But I agree with a previous poster who said it probably could have used a judicious amount of editing. ;)

Ginger Matthew wrote: "I read it when I was a teenager and listened to it last year. The audio is pretty good."

Great!! I'm glad you liked the audio Matthew!

Right you are good sir. This is a beast!!! I totally understand the need for characterization and atmosphere but... 1153 pages? 😱

Bahaha that’s like me and the movie Jaws. I won’t go out in the water past my knees now and that was decades ago! No idea why my parents thought watching a shark attack movie was good at the beach? 🤷🏼‍♀

Corey My Mom won't read this book or watch the movie because she's terrified of clowns, HAHA! I still have to read it myself!

Chelsea Humphrey Corey wrote: "My Mom won't read this book or watch the movie because she's terrified of clowns, HAHA! I still have to read it myself!"

I am 100% terrified of clowns as well. Probably because of this book. ;)

Elaine Mullane || Elaine and the Books I've read this twice; once when I was a teenager and again right before the movie came out. It was a long process on both occasions but so worth it. Fantastic story.

Chelsea Humphrey Misty wrote: "I want to tackle The Stand this year, it seems like such a daunting task. IT was one I read in my teens, I loved and hated it all at the same time. Always felt it could have been a bit shorter."

I'm also wanting to tackle The Stand but I doubt I'll work up the courage until 2019 bahahaha

Asghar Abbas This is without a doubt his finest work.

I know right, it like gives you that phobia of clowns. A couple years ago, up in my homestate, some idiot had this idea to go out at night dressed as a scary clown, probably some prankster who decided to take it too far, then other people started doing it, terrifying people, to the point where people were scared to leave their homes at night, it was pretty scary, never happened around our neighborhood though. Hasn't happened anymore though thank goodness.

Chelsea Humphrey Diane S wrote: "Super review, Chelsea. The book is so much better than the movie, imo"

I agree Diane! While I enjoyed the movie, I feel like they are completely different beasts.

🌟Divine Read it twice now & absolutely adore it..... will read again at some point ❤️

message 40: by Brooke (new)

Brooke This is the one SK novel I refuse to read, as I'm absolutely terrified of clowns & feel this would only exacerbate the fear. But there's a part of me that feels that I'm missing out on something great... hard to justify some things but you just have to go with your gut. So glad you enjoyed this though!

I totally understand that brooke. I too have an all encompassing fear of clowns, which is why it’s taken me so many years to work up the courage to read this! 🤣 At heart though it was a truly moving coming of age story and I’m glad I finally read it.

Blair My all time favourite King novel. I just re-read this 2 years ago, it’s an enormous task but a world I can’t get enough of. It’s truly a masterpiece

Blair I’m so glad you enjoyed it too!

The original film is so much better than the remake. Hard to beat Tim Curry and the wonderful cast. Hope you saw the ye olde version.
