How, thought I, would someone who never saw the inside of a classroom until age 17, ever manage to complete a PhD at Cambridge? Especially when she comes from a family with a tyrannical, abusive, religious nut at it's head and a mother whose approach to healthcare was to whip up another batch of backwoods nostrums and an abusive brother who enjoys physically torturing his relatives. Well, it took a good deal of hard work, grit, and intelligence to pull it off. Since I normally read a number of books at a time, I do a few chapters then switch. Did not take long for this one to grab me to the point where I had to read it straight through. Powerful stuff. One thing that I have never been able to figure out is why, once abuse victims have escaped, they attempt to go back and "fix" it. This book gives at bit more insight into that question but I doubt I will ever feel comfortable with the idea.
