it was amazing
bookshelves: horror, 2020-reads

Stand alone horror story published 1974.

I was going to start this review by saying how much I enjoyed it. But then I thought using a word like ‘enjoy to describe something that was so horrific kind of makes me sound a bit sick. Did the horror content put me off? That would be an absolute NO!!
I don’t have the luxury of being able to sit and read for 6 or 7 hours at a time but like the proverbial moth and the candle every time I had a free moment I would find the book in my hands keenly awaiting the next gory detail.

The story.
Carrie is a 16 year old girl who, for all of her life, has been victimised, bullied and ridiculed. The cause of this anti social behaviour is due mostly because her mother is a religious zealot who ensured Carrie lives a life totally contrary to the rest of the world.
By the age of 16 Carrie has become socially withdrawn, a loner and a misfit, the kind of girl just asking to be picked on. And boy is she picked on.
For the last 16 years Carrie has just sucked up this abuse. But how much abuse can one person suffer before it all becomes unbearable?
The straw that pushed Carrie over the edge was the night of the school ball. An insult so outrageous Carrie loses all control.
What happens next you will have to read for yourself.

There is no doubt in my mind that Stephen King’s early horror stories are his best.

A resounding 5 stars.

Yes, the wording is always the tricky thing! : )

I still haven't seen the movie, but I've caught snippets since it's in the cultural zeitgeist.

PattyMacDotComma Terrific review - I'm almost tempted. Almost. Horror isn't my thing, but I love knowing how much other people "enjoy" it. :)
