I love books like The Nix!
Big contemporary novels (often American) bursting with incident, incisively drawn characters, myriad relationships, contentious politics and a mysterious, slowly revealed story that brings it all together.
The Nix is very funny, very moving, snappy and fizzing with ideas.
Much of this novel is set in the present but with large sections set in the 80s and earlier, particularly 1968 a year in America typified by free love, hippies, student demonstrations and Vietnam.
American politics is explored humorously and savagely, especially the yawning chasm between left and right, conservative and liberal. Parallels between the 60‘s and now are obvious.
So much of contemporary American society is dissected in The Nix that it would be a tediously long review to mention it all - although the stuff on social media, video games, student culture, the politically correct, the ugly traditionalist, lawyers, vacuous pop singers etc etc etc is brilliantly realised.
Just read it :)

Stephen Gibson Good review, Richard. Sounds like it’s massively influenced by Dana Spiotta’s ‘Eat the Document (2006). My tutor was talking about the incredible impact of Spiotta’s work on contemporary American Literature just yesterday. Thanks for the worked example. My review of Spiotta’s novel is coming soon on Stevie’s Reads. 😀🖖🏼

Victoria LOVE the enthusiasm! And you don't know how timely. I almost took it on a recent trip, its heft made made that decision for me, but I'm lining this up for a chilly weekend very soon.
