The Written Review :

If you haven't read this as an adult - pick it up today
I think there's just one kind of folks. Folks.
I (along with millions of other kids) first read this in grade-school. And I (along with those millions) didn't really get the point.

I remember thinking, Well... I already know discrimination is wrong. I don't get why I have to read a book about it...

Oh Lordy, if I could go back in time...

Rereading led to a (unsurprisingly) wholly different interpretation of this novel. I am in awe of Harper Lee and what she's written.

How could I have so completely missed the point back in fifth grade?
People generally see what they look for, and hear what they listen for.
We follow Jean Louise "Scout" Finch, the daughter of Atticus Finch - a prominent lawyer. Scout narrates the great and terrible tragedies of her life - namely the trial of Tom - an upstanding "colored" man accused of raping a white woman.

Atticus is appointed to defend Tom and soon, nearly the whole town turns against the Finch Family.
I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It's when you know you're licked before you begin, but you begin anyway and see it through no matter what.
Much like Scout, I was simply too young to understand much of what was going on the first time through.

I tell you, there were so, so many moments this time through where the light bulb turned on and everything just clicked.
As you grow older, you’ll see white men cheat black men every day of your life, but let me tell you something and don’t you forget it—whenever a white man does that to a black man, no matter who he is, how rich he is, or how fine a family he comes from, that white man is trash
My entire life, I never truly understood why this was such a classic, why people read it over and over, and why this (of all books) is forced upon kids year after year. I get it now. And I'm disappointed that I hadn't reread it sooner.

P.s. Sorry to my teachers for being such a sulky kid - they sure picked a great one. I was just so enthralled with reading other things that I didn't read this one as well as I should've.
Until I feared I would lose it, I never loved to read. One does not love breathing.

Kristen Peppercorn I hated having to read it for school too. I definitely need to reread this when I'm not being forced to do so.

It completely changes your perspective. I'm rereading a few books I was forced to read...and it's like, "wow. These teachers knew what they were doing"

Kim M Excellent review! I love this book SO MUCH.

J & J The best crafted novel ever.

J & J If you haven't read the first few paragraphs again after finishing the novel, do it! ;)

Audrey I did like reading it for school, but it was so much more as an adult.

Kyle Wells Atticus was one of my hero's growing up.

Brittany I loved it as an older school kid, but still didn't quite get the full point. Reread it and everything clicked about it.

Have you read The Secret Wisdom of the Earth? Similar to TKaMB, but more modern. The Secret Wisdom of the Earth

Totally agree, i want to give it a few years and reread again to see how my perspective changes

Never even heard of it, but it definitely looks interesting. Totally adding it to my tbr pile :)

Eric Plume I read this in high school, and my teacher at the time really focused in on it and had us analyze it. I did "get" it better than some, but I chalk that up to A: reading it at an older age than most, B: having a teacher who encouraged the class to dig into the meat of the story and C: having a mother who was from the South and was boots-on-the-ground for the Civil Rights movement.

One of my memories from the class discussion in high school (I'm putting this in a spoiler tag for the benefit of those who haven't read it);

(view spoiler)

Jaline I was a young adult the first time I read this, but it is definitely on my list for a re-read. Terrific review, Miranda!

Sarah Dorothea Great review! It's still on my to-read list. 🤗

ohmygosh. I remember reading that "thing" you mentioned in the spoiler and noting that none of the other characters noticed it in the book...which made me second guess what I was reading.

I almost want to go for another reread...

I have a feeling that I will be revisiting it every few years.

Tucker Almengor I just read this for school. It was really good but I had to listen at 2.0 speednto finish in tine for school

Miranda Reads Awesome :)

And I always listen to audiobooks at 2x speed. Life's too short for 1x :P

Miranda Reads LOL - love your enthusiasm :P

Tucker Almengor Miranda wrote: "Awesome :)

Yeah. I never knew that I could listen to things so fast but then I tried it and it saved so much time 😊

Miranda Reads Honestly, i burn through 2-3 audiobooks a week on 2x. It's the best :)

Tucker Almengor Miranda wrote: "Honestly, i burn through 2-3 audiobooks a week on 2x. It's the best :)"

Wow. Thats a lot. I usually only listen to 1 per week

Miranda Reads Ehhhh....it's fun to have something to listen to while cleaning or getting ready for the day or on the bus. My library has a digital section, so I can just download the books to my phone and listen wherever I want :)

Yeah. I use hoopla and overdrive but I don't get much listening time 😐

Kai (CuriousCompass) Here we didn't have to read it until high school, 10th grade; I read it in two days and then reread at a slower pace with the rest of the class 😂

Miranda Reads Tucker wrote: " ...Yeah. I use hoopla and overdrive but I don't get much listening time 😐 "

Awww :( That's too bad

Miranda Reads CuriousCompass wrote: "Here we didn't have to read it until high school, 10th grade; I read it in two days and then reread at a slower pace with the rest of the class 😂"

LOL - I used to do that all the time. I was too impatient to read at the class's speed :P

Bharath Great review Miranda! Makes me want to read it again, as I read it quite some time back..

Miranda Reads Thank you :) And this is definitely one of those books that I want to read (and reread) every so often!

Christine Marshall Great review, I am in complete agreement with all you said. I only wish when I first read it all those years ago, I would have understood even half of what I do now.
