“Dinner’s almost ready, Mom says. Aunt Cheri stares at Mom in silent question. ‘I have a vegan option for you, she adds.
Still a nutcase. Vegetarians, I can forgive. Vegans? Are they even real humans?
Nope. Not cool.
Authors, why do you find it necessary to ridicule those whose lifestyle choices are different than yours? I have seen similar “jokes like this pop-up in numerous novels. This type of humor is not funny. Please stop.
This story spends an inordinate amount of time bemoaning close-minded people in small towns. Do you honestly believe that your mockery demonstrates your open-mindedness? This story did not work for me at all. When the MC's friend Stacy hires a man to "play gay" because she believes it will be funny/shocking for a man to dress a certain way, I should have stopped reading. I kept trying to power through, but it got worse. The whole "humor" element seemed to be the author trying to get laughs at others' expense. No thanks. That poorly conceived "vegan joke" was the last straw.
I am not a nutcase. I am definitely a real human (who will not be spending money purchasing this book).

Thanks, my fellow human ;)
I appreciate your comments. I just wasn't feeling this story and then when the "nutcase" comment appeared, I shut that baby down. Ugh. Life is too short! Lots of better stories to enjoy.

After all, I'm not even a person :)

Right on! Thanks for the smile, Tamara. You rock!!

Ele, you are a sweetheart. I greatly appreciate your comments.
Like Sara mentioned, I usually try to let the mockery roll off, but this jab got to me. Isn't it ironic that authors writing about MM romance, who think they are being so inclusive, can be utterly blind about their own prejudices toward different lifestyle choices? Thanks for the solidarity ;)

If you stopped at 50% you missed some of dear Stacey's bigger 'jokes' I seriously disliked her.

That's the spirit, Lyra! There are so many other fish in the sea (books in the library) that I think you will end up happier with a better catch (completely fish-free, of course ;) !

Thanks for writing, Meep. Just getting to vent my frustrations with you made me feel better. It sounds like I dodged more Stacey shenanigans by quitting while I was ahead ;) Thanks for chatting with me about the book.

Exactly this!

Alison, you are one of the kindest, most compassionate souls. I deeply admire the way you always support and encourage your GR pals, and count myself lucky to call you a friend. You have captured my sentiments so clearly!
A few years ago, I started a new job and one of my co-workers told me he was a vegetarian. He confided that he was so glad to have a vegan on staff because that would draw some of the worst of the taunting and teasing about his lifestyle from his shoulders. Unfortunately, he was right, and even the most "light-hearted jests" took a toll after a time.
Reading is one of my greatest pleasures, and there is no place for hurtful taunts in my "happy place!" Thank you so much, sweet lady!!

You bet! I'll go to bat for our team any day ;) Here's to better reads ahead. Thanks!!
And I'm from a small town so I guess this book wouldn't be for me. Thanks for taking one for the team.
And for the record, I'm a real human too.
