Biggest disappointment of the year.

The writing style was weird, Weir's "humor" was only based on his main character being female and the story was just boring.
Oh and the characters were as one dimensional as it can get.

I skipped a fair amount of pages and I rarely do that. That's how bored and annoyed I was.

David - proud Gleeman in Branwen's adventuring party :( Oh no, I'm sorry this was such a disappointment! Great honest review, Kayla!

Sydni Damn.

Anna When I first saw this book, I was really excited because I LOVED The Martian - it's one of my favorite books. But then after reading the reviews for this book, I was really disappointed and decided not to read it.

I'm sorry that it was so terrible.

Jorge Ramos I'm afraid we are going to have to disagree on "worst books of all time" level. Pity you didn't like it. I'll say this though. This book heavily heavily rests upon the reader liking the protagonist. I feel if you get her you will be ok- Also, Anna, take a leap and read it. The worst thing that can happen is that you don't like it. You will always have The Martian either way :)

I'm sure it's not actually on of the worst books of all time. But I personally haven't read that many books that I disliked this much yet, that's why I wrote that :)
Definitely being dramatic for the sake of making a point.

And that definitely played a role in me disliking the book but I also genuinely didn't care for anything else. Neither the story, nor the world building.
Plus it really rubbed me the wrong way, that Weir based almost any joke on his protagonist being a woman. Weird sex jokes everywhere, subtle slut shaming and generally a very unrealistic portrayal of a woman.
It really felt as if a 14 year old boy who has no idea how a woman thinks, tried to write a female character.

I absolutely adored The Martian. That's why my disappointment is that big. If this was a book by someone I don't know, it'd still be bad, but I wouldn't be that disappointed.
I kind of feel bad for Weir though, he probably had a lot of pressure for his second book, that actually might have influenced how it turned out.

Jorge Ramos I get that you weren't being literal about the worst books of all time, don't worry about it. I personally liked Jazz a lot, albeit I found her really weird at the beginning. Then I eased on her a bit, because you are perfectly right: she is definitely not a realistic portrayal of women. Or at least I would say she is not a version we are used to. But see I believe that is part of the point when conjuring a person that is literally being raised on another planet within the boundaries of a strict religious/caste education of her father which above all she rebels from. So at the end you either grow to love the character or get turned off immediately.

At least that's my take on it. Props for the honest/ 0 bs review Kayla, hope you get to read something that cleanses your palette before the end of the year! :)

Syed Um, okay not picking this up then. I had it on my to-read list but I don’t think I’ll be reading it anytime soon.

message 10: by Felicia (new)

Felicia Sounds like Weir blew his wad with The Marian 😏

message 11: by Eli (new)

Eli Lol ich war gerade mega verwirrt weil ich so dachte hä?? Der hat doch sonst nur ready player one geschrieben, das mochtest du doch auch nicht?? xD wieso nennt der denn das blöde Buch Artemis? 😅
Schade, ich fand marsianer auch total gut!

Dennis I agree with you regarding the characters. But I did actually enjoy the plot and felt fairly entertained. I'm sorry it was such a disappointment for you.

Adina (notifications back, log out, clear cache) Shit, I loveeed the Martian and bought this because of that. I hope I will like it better than you.

Ի✌️ Sorry you are disappointed by this one Kayla, but I'm not surprised. I loved the Martian, for the story, the humor of the main character and yes, also for the scientific info. This one never convinced me, the style is so different from "The Martian" and I didn't like the main character and some ideas of the story. I don't say it's a bad book, but it's not what I expected.

message 15: by Jessica (new)

Jessica Tobin Good to know. It was on my TBR list.

jamako Hm, while I definitely prefer The Martian over Artemis, I'm not sure if I liked this one more than most people on my friendslist because I listened to the audiobook read by Rosario Dawson. She did an amazing job and gave Jazz a certain rascally quality and roguish charm in almost everything she did and said. It really felt like one of those rare cases where the audiobook improves on reading it on paper - just a suspicion since I haven't read it on paper yet.

After seeing so many disappointed reviews of Artemis, with lots of animosity towards Jazz, I really wonder how big an impact Dawson's performance had on my impressions of the book. Did any of you who disliked it listen to the audiobook?

Amybibliophile I couldnt agree more. I listened this this on Audible and it made me so mad!!!

message 18: by Jim (new)

Jim i hated "Martian" and this sounds like the same concept, mostly, but on the Moon... no thank you.

Michael Great honest review, Kayla! This is a shame. I have a hardback copy that I've yet to read. Maybe I won't be reading it for some time yet.

Pat the Book Goblin My thoughts EXACTLY!!! I hated this book. I DNFed it about 90 pages in and I had enough. There was a such a contrast between Artemis and The Martian which I absolutely loved!
