it was amazing
bookshelves: asia, nonfiction

Mr. Mortenson is a pathological liar. Yes he had nice idea, he performed many good things in Central Asia BUT all that as far as I'm concerned because what he was doing behind the scene doesn't justify him a bit. Of course I do hope charity will fulfill its mission without him and I hope even more that he'll face the justice.
However, the main thing is a massive disappointment he'll surely raise in hearts of thousands of people who fell in love in his personality while reading his books. I'm not one of them. Somehow I found the guy quite repulsive and I didn't finish his “Three Cups of Tea. He presented himself as egoistic, self-promoting thief but I have to admit I never thought I should add to the list that he is above all A LIAR.

I have many friends who were raving about his books and couldn't quite understand how I feel about him. I even suspected that they were accusing me of being cold and detached from people's suffering (which couldn't be more far from truth) and I feel such an anger on theirs behalf. I found his lies ridiculous; I laughed several times while reading this book when Krakauer (an amazing journalist) presented parts from Mortenson's books and then what actually happened.

I'm SO voting for this book! Now I'll browse through my friend's list and whoever listed “Three Cups of tea on her/his shelf I'll send recommendation for this book.

5 stars because of the importance of the story!

sylvie This is truly a disgusting thing Greg Mortenson did. I did not read THREE CUPS OF TEA and I am glad I didn't....:(

Milan/zzz You're familiar with the story? I just watched 60 minutes about the issue. *think I'm gonna puke*

K.D. Absolutely I loved his first book! I thought he was all-saint and that. Now, I am intrigued. I will try to see if I have a budget for this book. Or maybe wait for this to come out in the second-hand bookshops here in the Philippines a couple of years from now. Thanks, Milan/zzz!

Thks for the recommendation. I never finished "Three Cups of Tea", but that was mainly because I didn't like the writing style. Did not read enough to actually form an opinion on the guy through the book. I do, however, think very highly of Jon Krakauer and found his comments I heard through the media very interesting. A friend of mine did read Mortenson's book and was very impressed and touched by it. But that was before all the hoopla about him fabricating and "enhancing" the actual story came out. Now she can't wait to get her hands on a (cheap) copy of "Three Cups of Deceit".

Mary Arkless I had heard there was some controversy about Mortensen. If I see a copy of this book, I'll try to get my hands on it. Wonder if the local library system has it.

Ruby Of course, you remember the negative reaction I had to the book while staying at your house. There was something about it that just seemed distasteful and false. I remember you and Talya were the only other people I knew who felt that way about Three Cups of Tea, and anyone else I said that to accused me of being judgmental or heartless (even though I am one of the only people I know who has actually worked in rural villages in Asia). It just goes to show that SuperTalya, ZZZ, and Therubycanary are discerning readers!

♥ Marlene♥ I love Jon Krakauer. he is one of my favorite authors. The problem is I did not read the other guy book but I do know Jon writes the truth. 9Under The banner of Heaven comes to mind. so checking all the other books I decided to vote for this book. xx

♥ Marlene♥ I love the polls cause it gives me many books to add to mywish list but I find it impossible to vote cause I ahve not read any 1 of them yet. So I just vote for the nonfiction category.
