Othello

Oh, Othello, thou art such a disappointment. And by that I mean the character and not the play. I was somewhat surprised to see that Iago was the actual "protagonist" of the play, or at least the character who was in the focus and whose scheming we were following. And whilst Iago was somewhat sensible and intelligent, Othello was just the dumbest fuck ever. Honestly, my man, you did not deserve Desdemona and whilst I'm furious that she "had" to die (I mean, it's the Bard, all of his female characters die or end up tied with weird ass men), I am actually quite happy that Othello kicked the bucket as well.
This dude was such a bore. Othello let himself be manipulated by Iago so easily and the lack of trust he had in his "one true love" Desdemona was just laughable. Iago came up with the most random accusations towards Desdemona, basically saying that she was cheating on him with Cassio, and Othello believed that, despite the fact that Iago’s only "proof" was a fucking handkerchief. I could cry. Othello didn't go to Desdemona to hear her side of the story (like any reasonable person would), no, he just accused her of being a "whore" (his literal words, not mine) and wined about the fact that women are so evil and make life so hard for men. Buhuhu, cry me a river, baby.
However, Othello was not the only stupid ass in this play. Roderigo let himself be just as easily manipulated by Iago. I mean there is literally one scene in which Roderigo threatens to drown himself (he was miserable because he had the hots for Desdemona as well, what a surprise!) and Iago gets him pumped up again by appealing to his "manliness" and telling him "to drown blind puppies" instead. I can't make that shit up. Iago is a toxic mess but I stan him, the whole comedic weight of the play was carried on his shoulders.
Iago actually stabs Roderigo to death in the end (classy!), and I had to pretend to be shocked. It was all quite predictable but that totally didn't matter, I was rooting for all of those bitches to die. Apart from my precious Desdemona, they really did her dirty. Ugh. First her weird ass father who accused her of "treason of blood" because she hit it off with Othello without telling him. I mean judging from Brabantio's reaction, can ya blame her? Her father was wack. [I find it lowkey kinda funny that he died off-stage and Shakespeare didn't feel the need to expand on that. Brabantio really was a useless character. Bye Felicia, get yo overly dramatic ass outta here.] Then she got fucked over again by Othello and his lack of trust in her. And even Shakespeare did her dirty by not using her to her fullest potential, I really didn't need another "obedient wife" who would literally die for her stupid ass husband.
I also didn't have any sympathies for Cassio. He was way too drunk the whole time and treated the prostitutes like shit, so he can basically choke. And he almost did, if only Roderigo would have been more precise with that sword but oh well, Roderigo was a good for nothing, so why am I even surprised that he cannot successfully stab someone to death? The only character who kind of came through was Emilia, Iago's wife, I loved that she constantly called out the sexist bullshit of the men in her life, especially when she realised that her husband was behind it all and Desdemona's demise. Emilia snapped and I was cheering her on:
So, all in all, Othello is full of unlikeable characters who make one stupid decision after another and just in general trust the wrong people without thinking for themselves... and it's fucking awesome. I know it's supposed to be a tragedy but I found it so entertaining. I laughed my ass off the whole time. Iago is just such a snake, it was hella funny to see how he so easily tricked everyone and basically got everyone stabbed in one way or the other. On top of that, I really appreciate the ending of the play because I thought I had it all figured out, with Iago coming out on top and ruling over Cyprus in the end, but no, the Bard envisioned a different ending for this character and I enjoyed being surprised like that.
Lastly, it is worth noting that Shakepeare used the word “trash" to refer to a character in the play (#relatable #me), made countless allusions to sex (like for real, this was sex galore, "lie with her? lie on her?" who knows, amirite?) and also used the word "swagger" unironically. I really stan a timeless queen.

Let husbands knowIt was much needed for a female character in this play to come through like this because some of the male characters were just so fucking delusional, I love that a sister put them in their place. I mean, at one point, Othello is literally sorry for himself and that he now no longer has a wife and I'm just like DUDE YOU LITERALLY STRANGLED HER FIVE MINUTES AGO? What is wrong with you? The fact that Iago stabs Emilia in the end is just sad. I wanted my queen to live.
Their wives have sense like them: they see and smell
And have their palates both for sweet and sour,
As husbands have. What is it that they do
When they change us for others? Is it sport?
I think it is: and doth affection breed it?
I think it doth: is't frailty that thus errs?
It is so too: and have not we affections,
Desires for sport, and frailty, as men have?
So, all in all, Othello is full of unlikeable characters who make one stupid decision after another and just in general trust the wrong people without thinking for themselves... and it's fucking awesome.
