's review

it was ok
bookshelves: romance, non-ya, diverse, eh, unpopular-opinion, reviewed, 2-stars, authors-of-color

things about this that were very good:
- the autism rep
- the fact that while the author was researching said autism rep, she got diagnosed with autism
- this is #ownvoices for autism and asian rep! yay! cool inclusion of vietnamese culture!
- the female character is the moneymaker/works in STEM and the male character has less money/is a creative! employment gender role reversal.

things about this that were not very good, for me, personally, sorry:
- a woman getting f*cked out of some of her autism symptoms
- a man not taking no for an answer (one time a man does this and it's Bad. but when the hot love interest does it, it is Very Very Good, apparently.)
- i did not like the smut and i am sorry but i did not
- the word "quirky" turns me off a character faster than you can say not like other girls
- the protector-man gender roles were so bad
- also so much "chicks love that romantic stuff" and "men never talk about feelings" type gender roles
- REALLY WEIRD PARENT CHARACTERS WITH INCONSISTENT CHARACTERIZATION
- felt pretty insta-lovey to me. like one second both are like "we cannot be in love!!!! never will we allow ourselves!!!" and the next. boom. lovefest city, population these two nerds.

anyway. this book didn't work for me but clearly i'm in the teeniest minority in world history so.

bottom line: read this if it sounds good to you i guess? basically the bottom line of all my reviews is "please do not feel compelled to listen to my opinion and/or take it seriously."

Correction: So...your liking it?
Also, I didn't realize you were currently reading because I mostly check updates on my Kindle E-reader which has a rudementary version of ŷ. When someone writes a review I cant see what shelf the shelve the book on.

Hayley ☾ (TheVillainousReader) I’m a good way?

Hannah Wilson Wow, really surprised the reviewers I follow didn’t mention any of these things, since they usually criticise these kinds of elements. Thanks for pointing them out so I can decide if I still want to read it!

Nadia Awadi I guess the cuteness of the couple made me like this book even with those problems. tbh, most of those things usually don't bother me that much or I didn't notice them but I can see your POV. great review!

Sarah Joint I think I'd be in the same boat for this one... nice review!

Alice Yeah I thought the love interest was being weirdly aggressive at times, but I thought it was just me not liking him.

Alice His daddy issues. Also I was kinda bummed to find out Stella is White after reading the whole thing.

message 25: by Angelique (new)

Angelique I honestly found the book rather boring.

message 26: by eli (new) - added it

eli im split on this. i dont usually like romance books in the first place and i got excited when i saw this had autism rep esp autism rep w a Girl but this sounds disappointing. i might try it for myself though

Rawan In my review I couldn’t pinpoint exactly what I did not like in this book. So thank you for putting my thoughts into words! 100% agree with you!

message 33: by [deleted user] (new)

your reviews are hilarious!!!
i'm not the biggest fan of smut either, so i may give this one a miss for the time being :)

message 34: by Aura (new) - added it

Aura Thanks for this review. I have seen a lot of glowing reviews for this book that are very generic. I love your kind of details. BTW, I hate insta-love.

thank you!!! insta-love is the worst. what is the POINT of reading a romantic plotline if the plotline is just insta-love???

Ro soooo true

Jennifer Schreiner Excellent review! I read this because it was the goodreads choice for best romance thinking it must be good. Oi! Michael was a full-on gross dbag especially after he learned Stella's secret from Quan. He just go grosser and more caveman-like. I think this book had a ton of potential, but it really got annoying with the second half "Me Tarzan. You Jane" stuff.

Momma Leighellen’s Book Nook I am so thankful someone else didn't like this book. I can't believe it was up for Book of the Year. WHA!?!!? Just trashy garbage.

message 49: by Luana (new) - rated it 1 star

Luana I thought it was just me...but my gods! This is extremely hard to finish. All the cliches are driving me insane. I thought it was going to be funny, and I had no idea it verged on erotica so much. And there is more to autism than just How Stella is portrayed. Well I know how this is going to end. I have been rolling my eyes so hard, I’m afraid I might go blind!

message 50: by Jess (new) - rated it 4 stars

Jess Whilst I loved the book, I can understand where you're coming from and how they are problematic. I read somewhere in this conversation that Stella is white? Where did it explicitly say that in the book? I pictured her as Korean or something haha :) I thought that made the story better actually, two Asian leads. So kinda disappointing if she really is white :(
