it was amazing

4.5 stars. I was hooked while listening to the audiobook and finished it in 2 days. The family dynamics, tension, and nuance is well done. The themes about parenting and motherhood - what is considered "good" parenting and who is a "good" mother - was such an interesting exploration, along with how white suburbia can be suffocating and push for conformity. But most of all, I loved the portrayal of well-intentioned yet ignorant white and upperclass people, and the gap between a privileged and white POV versus an immigrant in poverty. It’s done in such a subtle way that’s not in your face and gives readers enough room to explore and think through these issues for ourselves. The only reason why I hesitate to give this 5 stars is I don’t think much was done with Mrs. Richardson’s kids for readers to care about. I think the ending would have been more impactful if the kids had been better developed and thus have a well-rounded cast of characters.

Noresa I read this because of the Asian month reading thing you announced and man..... This was so good. I don't think I would have picked this up otherwise. Thank you so much lol

Heather-Lin Glad you loved it too! Do you plan on watching Hulu adaptation?

Cindy yes i'm excited to watch the hulu adaptation!

BookishBoricua I was actually disappointed in this one. I loved her exploration of motherhood from the perspective of many different women throughout the book, but the characters were just so predictable in their behavior, and yeah I know people are like that in real life, but it got boring quick on the page. I did not give two f*@ks about any of those kids or frankly the adults either. Just started the Hulu series and .....it's quite a ride. So glad you made this a prompt for Asian readathon this year!

Emily I’ve heard mixed things about this one but your review makes me want to pick it up!

Giang This was a really slow burner for me, but overall I did enjoy it and how Ng explored race tensions, family dynamics, especially toxic parenting. If you watch the Hulu show, some of the parts are a bit different from the book and I found the show more plot-driven, but still somewhat engaging.

I enjoyed "Everything I Never Told You" more, though :)

Wendy This is one of my favorite reads ever and I am SO glad you loved this! I think my favorite scenes are yours, in which “ally whites believe they are just as able to deal with POC issues as POC. I LOVED the discussion on whites-adopting-POC children and the fact that introducing culture isn’t as simple as putting scrolls or playing Chinese flute music in a baby’s room.

Can’t wait for your wrap up on this!

Scarletizm Oh good to hear! I just watched the show and thought it would be a boring book to read but nice show to watch. Good to know my assumption may be wrong.

Sea Bunny Voyager Am excited for the Hulu adaptation as well! I asked my mother if she wanted to watch it too and she seemed interested so I think it will spark some good conversation between us. This has also been a really quick read, I'm halfway through in one day. Ng's writing just flows, and I really appreciate how smooth her dialogue is.

itisih I just started reading this a few minutes ago . . . I was shook after seeing the finale half an hour ago!

cece If you enjoyed this, you should def read Everything I Never Told You, Celeste Ng's debut novel, if you haven't already! I think I might have enjoyed it even more than Little Fires Everywhere.

b bop Cindy! I knew you would love this book. I also read the audiobook and it was ADDICTIVE! I found myself driving around my neighborhood just so I could keep listening.

Stephanie I’m about halfway through and while I did really like her other book (everything I never told you) I think this one is better, can’t really put my finger on why but I am really enjoying it.
