Alright, confession time. I wouldn't label myself as a classic kind of gal (when it comes to this specific genre, ahem) so, naturally, a gothic mystery set in the 1930’s was uncharted waters but seeing as this book sat on my shelf for a few years, I didn’t have to set sail until I was ready, or so I thought. Special thanks to my book club for selecting this iconic tale. Anchors aweigh!
The story of Rebecca has a bit of a slow start that I came to appreciate in leading up to the suspense and mystery of the story. Du Maurier’s skillful plot-weaving and lyrical prose just felt like true, authentic storytelling. The vivid imagery and character development was thoughtfully written and beautifully crafted but also not overly flourished to the point that a novice reader in the classic genre, like myself, couldn’t follow what was happening.
The prevalent, lingering sense of unease throughout (and I’m not just talking about the constant self-doubt of the helpless, unnamed female narrator) and the unexpected turns definitely made for some tense, cringe-worthy moments. Even with a few different “standards of the time the book was written, it’s no surprise that this eerie tale remains timeless.
Like many other classics, it’s very easy to take a deep dive into the many other underlying themes but if you’re generally in the mood for a classic, gothic mystery then consider your search at an end as Rebecca might be your match...
