it was amazing
bookshelves: poetry-drama, reviewed

I just had to quote this from a review I read: "DNF at almost halfway through. Too much depravity and immorality for me." There's a lot of depravity and immorality around now too. How does one cope? lol

Perhaps they would have disagreed with the author of Pure: Inside the Evangelical Movement That Shamed a Generation of Young Women and How I Broke Free ? (I don't think I should recommend one of my favourite dirty books, the beautifully-written, utterly depraved (although surprisingly moral, depending on your point of view) Story of O

Peter Tillman TBR, if I live long enough.... Love the cover art!
And thanks for the PetraSnark鈩!

Mythology is not for the faint of heart, I suppose."

I hope that reviewer doesn't happen upon The Satyricon!

Andrea You like Story of O? I just can't get through it (tried twice). The lack of consensuality and communication is just too much for me... Or don't I get it?

It's not nonconsensual at all. She just gets her freak on that way sometimes, and sometimes with girls she likes to dominate. It is extreme though, but so beautifully written.

Jenna 鉂 鉂€ 鉂 Ha, ha, thanks for the laugh, Petra! It's hard to imagine what the reviewer who bitched about Ovid being depraved and immoral would think of The Story of O. I'm cracking up 馃ぃ馃ぃ馃ぃ馃ぃ

Dmitri I bought a brown paper copy of 'O' in 1970 in Paris. It was mildly stimulating and fairly well written.

"Mildly stimulating", I wonder what you would give a 5 to? ;-)

Sanjay Varma This reminds me of a user review of the film 鈥淨uest For Fire.鈥 The review said that in the first 5 minutes the film depicted rape, homicide, and cannibalism. While this is technically true, it does sort of apply 20th century ethics to cavemen. 馃

I know what you mean. In Victorian times, in books from then, I think such people would be described as having an apoplectic fit at such outrage!

Dierregi I love the Bernini statue on the cover. It's Daphne's metamorphosis into a laurel tree to escape from the lustful Apollo. Just saw a series on the masterpieces in the Villa Borghese museum. That statue is one of the most famous, because technically extremely difficult and sculpted by a very young Bernini, but already a master.

I didn't know that. Thank you. It's really beautiful. I love to see it IRL.
