it was amazing
bookshelves: 2018-reads, fiction, funny-haha, gender-stuff, irish, war-and-peace

Ah, this was terrific. I came to it with some trepidation - despite winning the Booker, it’s also had some bad reviews that made it sound nigh-on unreadable. Not true! I could hardly put it down. The narrator, middle sister, is an eighteen year old in the 70s or thereabouts in an unnamed city (mighty like Belfast), known in the community for her reprehensible reading-while-walking. When she attracts the stalkery attention of an older, married paramilitary leader in a white van, the titular Milkman, middle sister is unable to communicate her predicament effectively. The tone is perfect: conversational and full of both wit and menace. I kept reading passages aloud, whether to spouse or to myself, the better to enjoy them.

Allison ༻hikes the bookwoods༺ I was on the fence about this one as well (because of the negative reviews), but you are making me want to push it to the top of my list!

Emmkay Allison, it seems like people have strong feelings one way or the other, but I was firmly in the ‘love camp!
