really liked it

I have a hard time reading novels from the German perspective on WWII. They usually all contain the same type of apologist rhetoric ("Nazi's suck! We're just fighting for the Fatherland, We don't really hate the Jews, Why I have a Jewish friend/I slept with a Jewish girl once blah-blah-blah", etc.). It's generally expressed in the first few pages so the reader knows that *these boys* are ok. It's grating every time I read it. Das Boot is no different. Having said that, this was a good, intense and gritty sea story. It humanized ze Germans and it was full of sturm and drang. However, I was never really able to weep for the boys on the boat throughout their trials and tribulations. Worth a read though if you're in the mood for something WWII-y and North Atlantic-y.

Trish Try some Heinrich Böll. I tried several times to find his name listed on Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ, but can't seem to get anything to come up. Used book stores will have his stuff--it is unforgettable, searing, real, and shows the human behind the helmet. His stories are good. I can't now remember if I ever read an entire novel. He won the Nobel Prize in 1972.

Thanks for the recommendation. I just read his bio on Wikipedia. I'd definitely be interested to see what his viewpoint on WWII is like. I'll hunt down one of his novels. Thanks!

Petra nearly in Melbourne All Germans of a certain age coming into my bookshop and on seeing the Chai I often wear, will mention something or other about how they have Jewish friends, really didn't know anything and all that absolute bullshit within the first five minutes of conversation.
