I must admit I was quite disappointed with this book. I think the idea behind is fantastic but the plot development just didn't do it justice. As has been mentioned before by other readers, the book is just too long and parts of it seem completely aimless. Some characters seem to serve no purpose and most of them are not engaging at all. I think the main problem is that it takes ages to reach the climax of the book and when you get there, it just feels "oh, that's it then?". I think Gaiman liked his idea too much and got a bit carried away with, where a more concise story would have made a great book!

Judy Pancoast I expected to love it, but unless you have nothing else to do but read this book straight through, you are bound to be confused at some points. I agree with you that it could have been pared down and been much more enjoyable. It was actually a somewhat stressful reading experience!

✘✘ Sarah ✘✘ (former Nefarious Breeder of Murderous Crustaceans) I read this one years ago, and to be honest, I don't remember much about it now...except that it was a disappointment;) Have you read Anansi Boys, Judy? Now that one I absolutely loved:D

Matt Shepker I really love reading your reviews and it looks like we have a tendency to align very closely on our reviews/thoughts. I'm having a really hard time getting through this book. It has been very slow going, which is surprising for me. I don't like abandoning books, but I'm pretty close to it.

✘✘ Sarah ✘✘ (former Nefarious Breeder of Murderous Crustaceans) Thanks, Matt:) I have to say that, of all the Neil Gaiman books I've read, this is probably one of my least favorite. Did you read Anansi Boys? I read it before I did this one, and absolutely loved it, so you might want to give it a try:) Oh and by the way, did you manage to finish this one, or did you give up on it?

Matt Shepker I managed to slog through it, but I pretty much skimmed through the last 150 or so pages. The concept had promise, but I had read the same concept in The Case of the Toxic Spell Dump by Harry Turtledove and that was _much_ better executed and written 10 years earlier. I haven't read Anansi Boys, but I have it on my list.

I'm waiting for the next Sandman Slim book and just picked up Kadrey's latest book... I'm looking forward to your review on that. Your Sandman Slim reviews are what led me to follow you. Great stuff!

I'd never heard of Toxic Spell Dump until you mentioned it, and it definitely sounds like something I'd enjoy! Adding it to my TBR as we speak:) I hope you enjoy Anansi Boys as much as I did, especially since it's probably one of my favorite Gaiman ever!

Thanks for your comment about my Sandman Slim reviews:) It made me blush all the way down to my little pincers, especially since Jimmy Stark is my #1 boyfriend, and the undisputed star of my High Security Harem:D

I'd pre-ordered The Grand Dark and picked up my Kindle to read it a couple of days ago, only to realize the European release had been postponed to the end of June. No idea why. I'll try and read it sometime over the summer. Some of my friends read it and found it a bit disconcerting, nothing like the stuff Kadrey usually writes (especially in terms of humor/snark). After reading their less-than-enthusiastic comments, I can't say I'm in a hurry to read the book, haha. Talking about Kadrey, have your read Another Coop Heist? Book 1 is really funny and entertaining, and I hear book 2 is just as good;)
