Hurray, this is my first (auto-)biography ever.

Having heard plenty of good stuff about this book, I still didn't have any idea what to expect. I knew this was not only going to be a very intimate but also a highly political read. I think it is precisely that reason that made me pick this up in the end. I have had the goal to do more educational reading outside of uni and work and this book promised to be a good mix of "leisure" and "education". In general, I would say, Michelle did a really good job illustrating her way of "becoming". I particularly enjoyed her no-nonsense writing style and her eloquent but direct way of putting things.
May she have gained fame for becoming the first Black First Lady of the United States, I was especially interested in her upbringing and coming of age, wanting to understand what it was that made this woman so charismatic and shining in my eyes. Watching interviews and other material of this amazing woman, from the very beginning I felt like I was looking at a powerful but also a kind woman that seemed to know her bases quite well.
While listening to this audiobook, there were so many moments I smiled or cheered the young woman on, but even more passages made me thoughtful. Some of these depicted what being a Black young woman in a racist world means, some brought me close to what it is like to be famous and under the scrutinizing eye of the media pretty much 24/7. It was a pretty good reality check for me as a white woman.
I don't have any real criticism to bring to the table for this book. I did catch myself being highly irritated when she talked too much about what Barack was doing and his struggles. I know, however, that this is just the reality of being married and loving someone and empathising with their battles. Still, sometimes I literally thought "Michelle, stop talking about your husband, this is your book, not his.". Can't help it.

Still, I highly encourage all of you to take some time and read this book. It was a lesson and a prep-talk at the same time.
