Katie Long I am so glad to hear this! I loved Grief is the Thing with Feathers and was really hoping this follow up would not disappoint.

Will I liked Grief is the Thing with Feathers fine but I didn't love it the way so many others did. Did you read it, Maggie, and, if so, how does it compare? This one really intrigues but I'm worried that if it similar to Grief I might be disappointed.

Marchpane Sorry, I haven't read Grief is the Thing with Feathers (but now I really want to!), so I can't say how they compare. From what I can glean from reviews, Lanny is not quite as experimental with the language, but heavier on the fabulist/folklore/fairytale elements?

Dan Great review, Maggie. A three word review gives me something to aspire to (seriously).

Marchpane Haha! Well I did have vague intentions of writing up a full review, but maybe I should let this one stand :)

Please let it stand: it’s a classic.

Susie Yeeeeeessssssssss!!!!!

Marchpane It's so great Susie.

Katie Long Book club commitments be damned. I’m going to have to make time for this one this weekend!

Marchpane Katie, I really hope you are enjoying this one. I heard a sample of the audiobook and it is something pretty special too.

Will OK, I'm sold. I broke down and ordered it from BD yesterday.

Marchpane So glad to hear that Will! I really hope you love it too (and fingers crossed for speedy delivery).

C I N D L E I'm a fan of books set in quiet, English countryside villages so I'm interested in this book. Most of the reviews I've skimmed all praise it, but seem to in one way or another describe it as "can't put it into words," or say that it has elements of magical realism. I have the author's other novel, 'Grief is the Thing With Feathers' so I guess that's a good sign that I may like his writing style and the themes he explores. I'll add this one to my list as well, nonetheless.

Marchpane Cindle, I think maybe people are being vague on purpose in order to preserve the magic! For me the closest comparison to this fantasy/reality blend is the movie Pan's Labyrinth. The story is very different obviously, but the tone felt similar to me, like a fairytale for grownups.

Susan Yep, this novel is hard to describe - "flipping amazing" works!

Hahaha yep! Everybody should just read it :)

PhysCayt My copy just came into the library today. Really excited about it. This is probably the best review I’ve ever seen on goodreads. Hope I don’t set the bar too high.
