really liked it
bookshelves: short-stories, 19-20-19

The stories in Pastoralia were pretty great. Saunders definitely has a schtick here sad-sack characters worn down by the unfairness of life in (mostly) comedic situations but as there’s just six stories, it doesn’t get a chance to wear thin. The satire is goofy yet melancholic and it never feels mean. Such a short book though, reading it all in one go means it’s over too soon.

Trudie This one might need to be next on my list

Marchpane In hindsight I sort of wish I'd spaced these stories out over a couple of weeks - I never have the self-control though!

Lee Which was your favourite, if you had one?

Hmm, it's hard to say because I had read Sea Oak previously, and reading it for a second time it lost some of the surprise factor, but it's probably the best one. The one I keep thinking about is The End of Firpo in the World, it really does a lot in just a few pages.

Lee I’d have to say those are my two favourites now. But it can change so easily with a re-read!

Marchpane Very true! There's a lot of detail there to come through on a second pass.

Lee I think Firpo is the one I’ve read most. I can never figure out how he does what he manages there.
