This is the perhaps the Ultimate Bodice Ripper romance. It has EVERYTHING and everyone gets to let their inner monsters out.

It also keeps you glued to the page waiting for what comes next and after seven years of story and plot, everyone finally calms down enough to celebrate a real HEA.

This isn't a pc romance in ANY shape or form, but it is a great one and I have three copies that I regularly reread for the sheer epic intensity. No one in this is very likable, but they are unforgettable and if you claim to be a vintage bodice ripper devotee at all, you have to read this.

StMargarets Going down memory lane this weekend?

I know I read this long ago (when I was addicted to bodice rippers in HS and University) A great mental vacation.

FangFan After seeing this book discussed so much over on the old Ammy romance forum, I stumbled across a very battered copy at a thrift store and bought it. Put off reading it because the book was in such bad shape, or so I told myself. Came across another copy in much better shape at yet another thrift store and bought that one as well. Still haven't read it, but am now willing to admit that I'm just too chicken to tackle the bodice ripper of all bodice rippers. Cluck - cluck.

2hundo I think it's really well written and I always cry at some scenes

**spoiler**

(When Catherine falls from her horse and Sean carries her)

I read that Monson was later ashamed of her romances, which seems a real shame, she definitely had a way with the written word.

The first 275 pages are HARD, so I don't blame you - I read it before I was old enough to know better- many, many moons ago.

I agree, the story context had some dubious and dire moments, but she was a very good writer and I am sad she felt that way.
