it was amazing

After binge-watching HBO's epic adaptation of the series, I couldn't wait any longer to dive into this book that has been on my TBR list for a long time. Here are my honest thoughts:

"Station Eleven" by Emily St. John Mandel is a beautifully written novel that explores the interconnectedness of human lives and the importance of art in a post-apocalyptic world.

The novel is set in a world that has been devastated by a flu pandemic, known as the "Georgia Flu," which has wiped out the majority of the global population. The story follows a group of characters whose lives are connected in ways they could never have imagined. Kirsten Raymonde, an actress in a traveling theater troupe known as the Traveling Symphony, is the central character of the novel. She was just eight years old when the pandemic hit and witnessed the death of her family. Twenty years later, she travels with the Symphony, performing Shakespeare and classical music for the small communities that have survived.

The novel jumps back and forth in time, before and after the pandemic, following the lives of a handful of characters whose stories intersect in unexpected ways. The writing is lyrical, and the descriptions of the pre-pandemic world are vivid and nostalgic. The contrast between the before and after is stark and haunting, and the way in which the characters cope with loss and find meaning in their lives is both heart-wrenching and inspiring.

One of the central themes of the novel is the importance of art in human life. In the post-apocalyptic world, the Traveling Symphony brings Shakespeare to the communities they visit, reminding people of the beauty and power of art. The novel suggests that art is not a luxury, but a fundamental human need, and that it can provide comfort, solace, and hope even in the darkest of times.

One of the most striking aspects of "Station Eleven" is the way it moves back and forth in time, exploring both the pre- and post-pandemic worlds in vivid detail. Mandel paints a picture of a world on the brink of collapse, with characters struggling to find meaning and purpose in their lives. Yet even as the world falls apart, there are glimmers of hope and moments of beauty that shine through.

The most poignant scene in the novel takes place early on, as Kirsten and her best friend August watch a performance of "King Lear" in a Toronto theater. As the pandemic looms on the horizon, Kirsten is transfixed by the actor playing Lear, marveling at the power and beauty of his performance. Later, as Kirsten travels with the Traveling Symphony, performing Shakespeare for small communities, she finds that the plays have taken on new meaning in the post-pandemic world. They are no longer just stories to be enjoyed, but tools for survival and connection.

In addition to its exploration of the importance of art, "Station Eleven" is also a meditation on the fragility of human life and the interconnectedness of human experience. The characters in the novel are all connected in ways they could never have imagined, and their lives intersect in unexpected and often profound ways. Mandel weaves these threads together masterfully, creating a rich and complex tapestry of human experience.

"Station Eleven" is a powerful and thought-provoking novel that stays with the reader long after the last page is turned. It is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit, and a reminder that even in the direst of circumstances, there is still beauty and hope to be found.
