Fallen (Fallen, #1)

This book was not for me. And now that I'm finished, who is that supposed to be on the cover with the flowing black hair? Luce's hair was short for the whole book (which I think spans about two weeks?) Anyway, the writing wasn't bad, the overall premise wasn't bad, it was just the pacing and delivery that couldn't hold my attention. Nothing of substance happened through most of the book. By the time the end came, I was skimming, just trying to finish and didn't really care at that point. For the passages where there needed to be emotional engagement by the reader, I thought things were spelled out too much instead of hinted at and shown through actions and reactions on the part of the characters. Because the main characters fell in love in some past time (don't think that's a spoiler, it's revealed in the first chapter) I didn't have a chance to fall in love with them or for them myself. More flashbacks might have helped this. I guess angels are supposed to be the new vampires, and there's potential in the concept, but for me, there needs to be a greater sense of magnitude if you're going to be dealing with celestial beings. This book didn't feel significant enough.

"Not living up to its promising start. I want to understand better why two people are so crazy for each other, as difficult as that is to capture, the author needs to try."

"Not exactly sure where I am in this. I kind of want it to just be over. Sad, because it started out so promising."

"Why doesn't Luce make any decisions or take any action of significance? You can't relate to a character that you can't put your self into their shoes. The best way to do that is to compare the way you would make decisions or react in similar, if fantastic, situations. Luce barely reacts to anything, much less take the initiative."

"I'm at a point in the story where the MC is in peril, and I'm rooting for a bad outcome for her. That's not a good sign."
