** spoiler alert **
After thoroughly evaluating my feelings about this book, I've decided to settle at 2.5 stars.
Please be aware of major spoilers ahead.
My disappointment started in Chapter 4 when Locke was declared dead. Don't get me wrong...I hated this boi with every bone in my body, but I always believed him to be an intelligent manipulator. Not someone who would be stupid enough to die an easy simple death at the hands of Taryn of all people. He's the kind of character you love to hate. His thirst to be a part of a dramatic story was so profound that he was willing to do terrible acts just to set things in motion. So naturally, I expected him to play a much larger role in this installment. He could've had the potential to be the Petyr Baelish of YA fantasy. His deserved a death to be on page. What a waste...
My disappointment then increased during Cradan's reasoning for sending Jude into exile. Really? I expected something more than just a misunderstanding.
Let's not even get started with Lady Asha. Someone, please explain to me the purpose of her character. Why was she even introduced if her character wasn't going to play a poignant role in the story? The Wicked King was filled with plot twist after plot twist. The revelation of Asha being Cardan's mother was such a huge shock factor that it makes absolutely no sense when she didn't even manage to make a tiny dent in the overall plot.
But the biggest disappointment of all...Cardan and Jude's relationship. Here is a pen and paper...someone draw me a map from point A (where Cardan love-hates Jude so much ), to point B (where Cardan loves Jude so much he wants to play the dotting husband). This relationship was supposed to build very slowly. So slow that the chemistry was constantly off the charts. And one of Cardan's best qualities was that he never lost his personality despite falling for a girl. I loved that he never got cheesy and mushy like most male characters do when a girl enters the picture. He managed to remain a sassy person while being a nicer being at the same time...and I LOVED it. But he did a complete 180 in this book. It wasn't even a slow and gradual process. He's this nice wonderful person right off the bat.
The ending was way too easy. One of the reasons I adored the first two books was because of Jude's thirst for vengeance. The Wicked King ended with an implication that Jude was going to reappear in Elfhame with fire in her eyes. She was made out to be this girl with a revenge-driven persona for being exiled. But that wasn't really the case here. I didn't expect a perfectly crafted novel. But I also didn't think everything would this easy. Remember in The Cruel Prince when Madoc went batshit crazy and killed everyone? Well, I wanted jaw-dropping scenes like that. Not necessarily a mass murder spree, but scenes that would have my eyes bulge out in surprise like they did when reading the first two books. Cardan turning into a snake was not something I could take seriously.
I know this sounds more like a 1-star review. But despite all my disappointments, I still read this book like an addict. And well...Cardan's tilted crown and weird tail managed to make me smile. Overall, this series still remains to be one of my favorites. But I wish Holly Black put more time and effort into this final installment. I felt there was still a lot left unsaid. Specifically revolving around Locke and Cardan's mother.

I found a copy at Barnes and Nobles. Sometimes they have hidden copies a few days early. Not sure if it is purpose or accident lol.

After finishing, I agree with you. Unfortunately for me, it was a little bit of a letdown.

Really...like it was way too easy.

I just wish it was longer and more complex.

Good to know I am not alone. My GR page is filled with raving reviews.

Yes! I needed so much more than just that. (view spoiler)

I thought maybe I was being too hard on this book. But I’m now realizing a lot of people had issues. Good to know I wasn’t going crazy.

I agree with you. I didn’t think Holly Black of all people would pull punches. There wasn’t enough betrayal and backstabbing in this one like the first two books had. She went too easy with Locke and Taryn especially. Both character arcs went in a completely different direction than I was hoping. They got off too easy.

It was too short in my opinion. Don’t get me wrong, I dislike books that are unnecessarily long. But there was so much left out.

Exactly. The romance was the most disappointing of all. And it was Cardan’s 180 that made it less fun. I wish she didn’t release it early and took more time to edit and revise it.

Yeah and I was so excited when she moved the publication date up. But now I wish she took more time to write it lol.

Basically everything you said."
Makes me happy I’m not alone 😅

Yeah I’m realizing now that many people were disappointed. But as a I scrolled through my feed, I saw literally nothing by four and five stars. So so I thought I was being too hard. I now wish she didn’t release it early. I would’ve gladly waited longer for a better version of this.

Haha oops. There was actually a lot I left out of my review so all my disappointments were not listed lol.

You basically said everything on my mind in this review by the way.

I feel you. I’ve seen many authors get lazy with their last books lately and I’m not sure why this is. It’s like they already gain success with the first two so why try... All these main characters had so much potential. And every single one of them fell flat.

Yeah, it used to be the curse of the second book in the series... but lately, to me, it seems like the finales are failing more often than not. And I wonder why's that... maybe the pressure? Of what your fans want and the author suddenly starts to doubt what they planned?
Or maybe they had a great idea for a book, for a series but are unsure how to finish it?

Knew it was going to be lacklustre the moment (view spoiler)
So many unanswered things and super anticlimactic. Really shocking how book 1 is like a bloodbath with twists and comparing that to this, this is like a kiddy ride.
I just think either Holly did not know how to end it or wanted to move on to other projects. Which is sad because she definitely could've brought to the table with the same book 1 and 2 quality with this book.

For sure! Book 1 was amazing because of all the bloodshed and backstabbing. Book 2 was amazing because of Jude and Cardan’s push and pull as well as the word building and politics. Book 3 didn’t really have anything special. It fell short in all aspects. Madoc was this ruthless and savage person. I don’t like how easily he backed off. You’d think he’d have more backbone than that. Just UGHH. Every character was weakened.

Right? It's crazy. Feels like different author and characters. YES! He would never surrender. He wouldve fought till his last breath. Not only him, Queen Orlagh too. Like where she go? I thought theyd have a bigger role. SIGHHHH
Cardan became a plot device. And Jude just lost her spark. A lot of telling and not showing, here too.

To be honest, I have hate-read some book before. And I do feel kind of iffy with YA books. But I genuinely loved this series. First two book were amazing. And they made me realize that not all of YA is typical and predictable. But the third installment was a major letdown. I still consider this series one of my favorites in YA despite how I felt about this installment.

Right? Like I didn't need them to act like they did with each other in book 1. But there wasn't even bickering in this book. They were too lovey-dovey for my taste.

Haha right? And I'm sorry but I couldn't take (view spoiler)
I'm only on chapter 5. But so far it is really addicting. How much did you love it?
